Chilliwack, BC

Benefits:
HR Generalist
Qualitree Propagators
Rosedale, BC - Fully On-Site
Qualitree has expanded rapidly over the last 30 years - from two founders working out of a greenhouse to a major horticultural operation covering 100 acres. The workforce has grown in parallel, with 50 permanent staff and up to 200 seasonal and contract workers at peak, many from Latin America. We are a small HR team: a Fractional HR Director focused on strategy and culture change, a Pay and Benefits Coordinator handling payroll and admin remotely, and an HR Assistant who is moving on. The HR Manager is on extended leave, and this role reports to the Fractional HR Director in the interim.
You will be on the ground - present with managers through complex and sensitive conversations, visible and accessible to a diverse workforce. You will build trust through consistent engagement, not just when there is a problem to solve. You will deliver the fundamentals properly while thinking commercially - understanding what the business needs and shaping people solutions that support it. This is not a back-office role. It is not a process-following role. It is HR done properly - and if that is what you are looking for, read on.
The Role
This is a hands-on, on-site role at Qualitree's Rosedale, BC nursery. Some days you will be head down - working through documentation, coordinating recruitment, and keeping the Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) programme on track. Other days you will be walking the site, sitting with a manager to think through a people decision, or checking in with a seasonal worker who is a long way from home and their family. You need to be comfortable with both.
- Be the HR presence on the ground at Rosedale - the person managers and employees actually talk to, day to day.
- Support and coach managers on people decisions - helping them think, not thinking for them.
- Lead recruitment and onboarding for permanent and seasonal roles - moving at pace without cutting corners.
- Coordinate the Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) programme - the compliance side and the human side.
- Keep the business compliant with BC employment standards and WorkSafeBC - without making compliance the enemy of common sense.
If This Is You
You have at least 3 years of HR generalist experience under your belt, and you are ready for more. Not more volume - more responsibility, more influence, more seat at the table. What sets you apart is that you do not hide behind process. You find solutions. You are energized by being around people - you seek them out, build relationships naturally, and are equally comfortable working independently when the day calls for it.
- You are curious about our business - our people, our plants, our seasons, how we go to market and what makes us different.
- You are emotionally mature and confident - you can push back on a manager who is getting it wrong, hold a difficult conversation without it becoming personal, and know when to listen before you act.
- You think in outcomes, not rules - and if the policy needs updating or changing, you say so.
- You are ambitious - you see this role as a platform, not a destination.
- You are comfortable with paperwork and administration - not because someone is watching, but because you understand why it matters.
Experience and Credentials
- At least 3-4 years in an HR generalist role - agricultural, horticultural, food production or operational environments are a plus.
- A working knowledge of BC employment standards and WorkSafeBC - you know where to look, and you know what questions to ask.
- Ideally, degree qualified and/or working toward or holding a CPHR designation - we care more about your track record and how you think.
- Comfortable with technology - HRIS, data, AI tools. You do not need to be a specialist, but you embrace new ways of working rather than avoiding them.
- Spanish language skills are a genuine bonus - our seasonal workforce will appreciate it.
Qualitree is a working nursery - greenhouses, fields, the smell of growing things. The people around you are growers, production staff, and seasonal workers from across the world. It is a good place to work and a genuinely interesting one - if a business that makes real things, with real people, sounds like your kind of place, we want to hear from you.
