Horizon Health is seeking an exceptional candidate for a one-year Complex Spine and GeneralNeurosurgery Fellowship with our Neurosurgery team in Saint John, New Brunswick!

This advanced clinical training program is designed for physicians seeking to develop independent expertise in spine surgery and general neurosurgery within a high?volume, academically focused environment. The fellowship provides comprehensive exposure to complex spinal procedures, cranial neurosurgery, ambulatory neurosurgical care, and urgent or emergent neurosurgical management. Fellows will work closely with both neurosurgeons and orthopedic spine surgeons, gaining progressive responsibility across the operating room, clinic, and inpatient settings.

Incentives & Remuneration

The successful applicant will be compensated for their fellowship with a base salary of $80,000 annually, paid monthly. Additional income is available through after?hours OR assistance billing.

The following additional funding is available:

  • Conference funding available:
  • Up to $2,000 for attendance
  • Up to $5,000 for presenting research (poster, abstract, or platform)

Evaluation & Certification:

  • Quarterly evaluations by the divisional head of teaching, with input from faculty and allied health professionals.
  • Oversight and support from the local teaching committee.
  • Successful completion results in a Certificate of Completion from the Horizon Health Neurosurgery Fellowship Program.

What you will do

The fellowship is designed to ensure the successful candidate will:

  • Develop advanced operative skills in cranial and spinal neurosurgery.
  • Independently assess and manage common neurosurgical and spine conditions in ambulatory settings.
  • Manage pre? and postoperative inpatient care, including identifying and treating complications.
  • Provide supervised first?call coverage and triage urgent neurosurgical referrals.
  • Participate in research, with a manuscript submission or conference presentation.
  • Strengthen leadership, teaching, and communication skills for academic or clinical practice.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting in elective neurosurgical OR cases, progressing to primary surgeon as skills develop.
  • Participating in ambulatory clinics, including supervised independent clinics.
  • Providing first?call coverage (maximum 1 in 4) under attending supervision.
  • Rounding on inpatients and managing postoperative issues.
  • Engaging in departmental research and teaching activities.

Who you are

  • Meet eligibility requirements for a clinical fellow under bylaw C.3.7.1.
  • Hold licensure with the New Brunswick College of Physicians and Surgeons.
  • Maintain malpractice coverage through the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA).
  • Receive approval from the Division of Neurosurgery, Department of Surgery, Physician Lead for the Surgery Program, and Regional Medical Education Director.

Fellowship Structure

  • Work with 4–6 neurosurgeons for 9 months and 2–3 orthopedic spine surgeons for 3 months.
  • Typical workday ends at 18:00; average hours will be limited with regard to patient care and educational needs.
  • No more than 90 hours/week or 360 hours/28 days.
  • On?call duties at a 1-in-4 frequency; post?call days provided when required past midnight.
  • 20 vacation days, statutory holidays, and lieu days for on?call statutory holidays.
  • 5 conference days, plus additional leave for sick time (up to 10 days) and bereavement (up to 10 days).
  • Up to 90 days unpaid parental leave, with possible fellowship extension.
