STUDENT OPPORTUNITY - URBAN FORESTRY PLANNING AND MAINTENANCE

JOB SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Working Foreman for Horticulture this position will be responsible for tree planting programs and maintenance to include Arborday, residential street tree application programs, planting trees for new subdivisions and developments and ensuring that these new trees successfully establish in the landscape. Work will also include establishment of young trees in the landscape to reduce mortality and structural pruning to establish a strong foundation of trees for future success.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Selecting tree planting sites for street and park trees including selecting appropriate trees for each location based on soil volume and condition, site conditions and species diversity considerations.
- Inspection and acceptance of nursery stock
- Coordinate planting and maintenance of young trees
- Updating tree inventory as required
- Structural pruning and training of young trees
- Inspection of young trees and acceptance and rejection including scheduling of replacement trees as required.
- Assist with traffic control on tree maintenance sites
EDUCATION:
- High School Diploma.
- Minimum one year in Landscape or Forestry program in a post-secondary institution.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to use mobile technology for software such as ESRI, Excel, Infor.
- Knowledge of indigenous and introduced trees suitable for urban environments for climate zone 5b.
- Knowledge of tree physiology and growth characteristics for suitable placement in an urban environment.
OTHER:
- Class 5 driver's license.
CONTACT:
- Will be required to communicate with internal staff, provide direction to team members, contractors, respond to citizen requests for tree planting through verbal and written communication as well as through web applications.
SUPERVISION:
- Will be required to supervise other students and contractors.
CONDITIONS OF WORK:
- Will be required to exercise judgement on selecting the right tree for the right place, monitoring health and condition of planted trees and take appropriate action to minimize tree mortality.
- Work will be outdoors in all weather conditions along roadsides which will require training and application of traffic control principles, lifting and loading heavy equipment, and will involve extended periods of walking, standing and lifting. Will be required to work independently and monitor and manage performance of contractors and assigned student labour support.
- Hours of work will be Monday to Friday 8am-4pm.
