The Fuels team's primary mandate is to optimize physical fuels commodity portfolios within the energy value chain by eliminating supply risk and reducing cost and emissions. Additionally, the team is dedicated to building long-term value for the generating stations through sustainable fuels operations and innovation. The team leads all aspects of commercial, operating, logistics and transportation activities of fuels that support broader corporate, operating and marketing strategies. The fuel commodity portfolio consists of Light and Heavy Fuel Oil, Diesel, Uranium and Nuclear fuel bundles, Coal and Petroleum Coke. Aside from plant's fuel, the team is also responsible for commercial contracts for Limestone, Ash and Gypsum.

As part of the Fuels team within NBEM, the Fuels Specialist is responsible for negotiating and managing short-term fuel contracts for NB Power's generating stations. In addition, the incumbent will provide support to Fuels Manager in developing the mid-to-the-long-term Fuels strategies, maintaining external stakeholder relationships and providing routine market intelligence.

Key functions include:

  • Manage NB Power's physical commodity portfolio and associated financial risks while ensuring compliance with corporate risk management policies.
  • Collaborate with NB Power Energy Marketing, Generation, Business Development, Finance, and Legal teams to maintain effective partnerships and support coordinated decision-making.
  • Develop analytical models and recommend fuel purchasing and nomination strategies based on comprehensive market and financial analysis.
  • Oversee fuels P&L performance and identify strategic opportunities and risks related to fuel supply, procurement, and runout planning.
  • Coordinate day-to-day fuel operations, including inventory monitoring, balancing, and reconciliation to ensure operational accuracy and reliability.

Our ideal teammate will have:

  • Bachelor's Degree (Science, Economics, Business or Engineering
  • Master's Degree or Post graduate designation (MBA, CFA or CPA) would be an asset

Combined with:

  • Seven years of experience in commodity or energy trading supporting project development, daily operations, and issue resolution with at least five years leading commodity contract negotiations, with maritime and liquid, solid, or nuclear fuel contract management.
  • Experience of energy marketing, commodity trading and contracting, northeast power and gas markets and maritime/marine logistics and energy fundamentals
  • Three years of leadership experience
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite of products
  • Ability to communicate technical and financial concepts to diverse audiences.

An equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered. Subject to competition response, the minimum qualifications may be modified.
