East Cumberland Lodge (ECL) is a 74-bed licensed long-term care home located in the heart of Pugwash, Nova Scotia. We are seeking a dynamic and dedicated Assistant Director of Resident Care - Professional Practice to join our leadership team. Reporting directly to the Director of Resident Care, this role supports the leadership, coordination, and continuous improvement of clinical care services and professional practice across the organization.

Position Summary

As a member of our leadership team, the Assistant Director of Resident Care - Professional Practice provides support in the planning, coordination, and evaluation of nursing and personal care services. The role helps ensure the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based care that meets provincial standards and reflects the values and mission of East Cumberland Lodge.

Working collaboratively with the resident care team, including ADOC Quality, RN's, LPNs, and Continuing Care Assistants, as well as allied health professionals. The role contributes to ensuring compliance with legislation, collective agreements, and provincial licensing standards while supporting quality improvement, infection prevention and control, staff development, and resident advocacy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support leadership and operational oversight of resident care services to ensure excellence in clinical outcomes and resident satisfaction.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of resident care programs aligned with best practices and regulatory standards.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources and scheduling teams on staffing, recruitment, and performance management.
  • Promote compliance with legislative, regulatory, and licensing requirements related to nursing and resident care.
  • Lead and implement Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) programs, ensuring compliance with government, Public Health, and licensing requirements.
  • Monitor and evaluate IPAC practices through regular audits, staff education, and training to maintain high standards of infection prevention.
  • Ensure accurate reporting and continuous improvement of IPAC measures, working closely with the Director of Resident Care to enhance resident safety and reduce infection risks.
  • Foster a respectful and collaborative workplace culture that supports teamwork, staff engagement, and professional development.
  • Work collaboratively with physicians, allied health professionals, residents, and families to support holistic, person-centred care.
  • Participate in internal committees such as Quality Improvement, Infection Control, Occupational Health & Safety, and Leadership.
  • Collaborate with the ADOC (Quality), Educator, and Director of Resident Care to ensure best practices in care documentation (PCC), supporting staff education and maintaining compliance with regulatory and organizational standards.

Qualifications

  • Nursing Diploma or Degree in nursing and current registration in good standing with the Nova Scotia College of Nursing.
  • Experience supporting clinical practice and quality improvement in long-term care or healthcare settings.
  • Experience in Infection Prevention and Control, certification would be considered an asset.
  • Willingness to engage in ongoing professional development or post-secondary education.
  • Knowledge of provincial long-term care standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience with human resource recruitment and retention of licensed nursing staff.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and experience with electronic health record systems and scheduling software (e.g., PointClickCare, Staff Schedule Care).
  • Current BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) certification.
  • A clear Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check are required before employment.
