Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is inviting applications for two term (up to 1 year) Transit Technician, Transit Infrastructure positions in the Planning and Customer Engagement division of Halifax Transit.

Under the general direction of the Supervisor of Transit Infrastructure, the Transit Technician, Transit Infrastructure is responsible for all transit on-street infrastructure including bus stops, shelters, terminal, landing pads, etc. and assists in the planning and development of transit route design.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for determining infrastructure requirements for transit service. This includes ensuring compliance with industry standards to provide safe and accessible transit facilities.
  • Coordinate with Contract Supervisors for the purchase and installation of accessible landing pads and/or shelters pads and shelters. Including specs, priority and timelines of the work required.
  • Based on planned and existing routes visit potential sites to determine bus stop locations. This includes determining the information to be displayed on each bus stop sign, liaising with relevant stakeholders and HRM business units to obtain required approvals.
  • Maintains required supplies and equipment necessary to operator Halifax Transit's infrastructure program.
  • Analyze data for bus shelter criteria used to determine shelter locations, as well as provide input to other HRM Departments.
  • Responsible for ensuring bus stops are accurately input into schedule software and Transit infrastructure including bus stops, accessible landing pads, shelters, and benches are input accurately to GIS mapping software. Ensure accurate list of infrastructure is provided to relevant stakeholders.
  • Maintain transit infrastructure historical data.
  • Attend relevant meetings and site visits to represent the interest of Transit in regards to construction projects.
  • Participate in planning and development of transit services, facilities, specialized services and business opportunities.
  • Investigate and respond to complaints, recommendations, petitions and requests for service adjustments and changes.
  • Provides input and expertise to special events staff on transportation services.
  • Participate in Halifax Transit Committees, and other committees if required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and provide an annual driver abstract.
  • Other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:Education and Experience:

  • Diploma (2 years) in Planning, Civil Engineering, Math, Computer Science or Information Systems required. A degree in a related field is an asset. Diploma in GIS or Cartographic is an asset.
  • Two years' experience in scheduling in a complex environment, transportation planning or civil engineering is required. Two years technical related experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Sound Knowledge of public transit, transit technologies and scheduling / planning initiatives.
  • Understanding of HRM geography.
  • C.P.T.E.D. training considered an asset.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Experience with Transit scheduling software, GIS, CAD, ArcIMS will be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of HRM procurement/tendering process an asset.
  • An equivalent combination of education/experience may be considered.

Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check.

Please note - Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates, who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer's discretion.

WORK STATUS: Term - 1 Year

HOURS OF WORK: Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:00pm, 35 hours per week. Additional hours may be required depending on operational needs.

SALARY: $37.22 per hour as per the NSGEU 222 Collective Agreement.

WORK LOCATION: 1791 Barrington Street, TD Building.
