Maintenance Worker I - Building Services

Reporting to the Foreman – Building Services, this position is responsible for a variety of facility operations and maintenance duties. Primary responsibilities include janitorial services; installation, removal, and maintenance of ice; board maintenance; preventative maintenance; painting; equipment repair and maintenance; and supporting operations involving aquatics and sports field maintenance.

The role also includes maintaining a logbook, opening and closing the arena, driving vehicles, and operating other equipment required to complete assigned tasks. The position involves monitoring and adjusting mechanical controls and equipment, as well as providing customer service and dealing with the general public in a courteous and professional manner.

Qualifications Required:

  • Graduation from University or trade school program would be considered an asset.
  • A combination of relevant experience and training would be considered.
  • Completion of Highschool or equivalent.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's license.
  • Position will require a clear Criminal Record Check, Vulnerable Sector Check and Drivers Abstract.

What You'll Do:

  • Entry level position, become familiar with all aspects of arena operations.
  • Obtain Arena operators related training. If external training is not available experience may be considered after 2 years. Once training becomes available, employees are expected to take training in a timely manner.
  • Operate necessary equipment for the position (ice resurfacer, ice edger, mower, scissor lift, etc.).
  • Competent with all aspects of arena operation.
  • Direct and supervise students.
  • Ensure the facility is clean, safe, and ready for all user groups and the general public.
  • Follow, promote, and ensure all City policies, procedures, and work instructions are followed.
  • Ensure that general users, user groups, vendors, contractors, canteen workers manage and operate in a safe manner and keep the facilities clean and safe.
  • Respond to inquiries from the public and other municipal staff as required.
  • Other duties may be assigned as required.

What You'll Bring:

  • Minimum of two to five-years related experience.
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues, identify problems, and have them addressed.
  • Ability to communicate effectively - both in writing and verbally - with staff, user groups, contractors, vendors, and members of the public.
  • Strong analytic and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and files for the facility, equipment, and staff.
  • Support management in obtaining corporate goals, initiatives, and efficiencies.
