Job Information and Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Manager, Student Accessibility - Fred Smithers Centre, the Accessibility Advisor:
- Meets with prospective, new, and current students of the Fred Smithers Centre for intake (in-person or virtually via an approved platform such as Microsoft TEAMS, Zoom, etc.); reviews student applications, reviews their disability-related documentation and enters information into Accommodate as needed.
- Creates and maintains confidential student files.
- Advises and supports students on an ongoing basis regarding accommodations and other accessibility related situations; determines individualized accommodations via in-person meetings or virtually.
- Informs faculty of Fred Smithers Centre students who are in their classes and provides education/information on accommodations as required.
- Collaborates with faculty on how to best implement accommodations and devise strategies for student success.
- Provides ongoing guidance to faculty on specific accessibility needs, offering resolution suggestions to any issues.
- Works as a team member invigilating tests and exams in peak times or in the absence of Exam Support Staff.
- Completes screening process with students seeking funds for psychoeducational and ADHD assessment purposes.
- Generates statistics around new and returning students (monthly).
- Consults with other accessibility centres at post-secondary level.
- Answers inquiries from provincial guidance counsellors in the K-12 system
- Other related duties as required.
Experience and Education Requirements
To be the successful Accessibility Advisor you will have:
- University degree with a minimum of three years of directly related experience in a service environment (post-secondary and/or student services preferred) with direct experience supporting individuals with disabilities.
- Skills in active listening and strong student-centered service.
- Negotiation and conflict resolution skills
- Ability to apply sound judgment.
- Ability to handle and maintain confidential material.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, including giving presentations
- Demonstrated ability to work under pressure.
- Available to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.
- Ability to work virtually.
