The opportunity

The Employee Relations Manager within the Talent COE supports the delivery of compliance-sensitive HR processes, including employee relations investigations and involuntary terminations. This role acts as a trusted advisor to business leaders and Talent Consultants, ensuring operational excellence, consistency, and risk mitigation across the organization.

This position ensures operational rigor and fairness in handling sensitive HR matters, supporting the COE's mission to deliver consistent, high-quality processes while enabling Talent Consultants to focus on strategic priorities.

Your key responsibilities

Subject Matter Expertise

  • Develop Subject Matter Expert (SME) in all processes and best practices related to talent pillars, including terminations, investigations, code of conduct matters, and other HR-related areas, including performance management, to provide guidance and support to the team and enhance organizational effectiveness.

Internal Investigations

  • Serve as the first point of contact for intake of investigation requests from Talent Consultants, business leaders, or Ethics hotline.
  • Conduct preliminary assessments and coordinate fact-finding interviews.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and case tracking in compliance with firm standards.
  • Partner with Legal and Ethics teams to ensure investigations adhere to policy and confidentiality requirements.
  • Prepare summary reports and recommend corrective actions.

Terminations & Departures

  • Manage end-to-end involuntary departure processes, including:
    • Drafting termination letters and coordinating approvals.
    • Scheduling and supporting departure meetings.
    • Ensuring compliance with severance and benefits guidelines.
  • Liaise with outplacement service providers and ensure smooth transition for departing employees.

Compliance & Risk Management

  • Monitor adherence to employment law and internal policies.
  • Escalate high-risk cases to senior leadership and Legal as needed.
  • Maintain centralized records for audits and reporting.

Employee Relations Support

  • Provide guidance on disciplinary actions and policy interpretation.
  • Assist in implementing standardized processes for conduct matters and departures.

Skills and attributes for success

  • Deep expertise in employee relations and employment law, with the ability to independently assess risk and apply sound judgment in complex, high?stakes situations.
  • Strong capability to advise and influence senior leaders by providing clear, practical, and risk?balanced recommendations.
  • Ability to operate confidently and confidentially in a fast?paced, compliance?driven environment, managing multiple cases with competing priorities.
  • Collaborative mindset with demonstrated experience partnering with Legal, Talent, and business stakeholders.
  • Strong hands?on understanding of HR investigations and termination processes.
  • Ability to manage sensitive matters with discretion and professionalism.
  • Strong organizational and stakeholder management skills.
  • Analytical and solutions?oriented mindset, with ability to identify trends and recommend continuous improvements opportunties.
  • Ability to work independently, exercising strong critical thinking and judgment in complex situations.

What we look for

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Human Resources, Law, or related field.
  • 7+ years of progressive HR/ Employee Relations experience, with significant hands?on involvement in investigations, terminations, and complex ER cases
  • Deep working knowledge of employment law and compliance frameworks
  • Certifications such as Certifications such as CHRM, CHRP, are an asset.

EY reports salary ranges in accordance with applicable provincial pay transparency legislation. Individual salaries within the anticipated salary ranges noted below are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to internal equity, education, relevant experience, knowledge, and applicable skill sets.

  • Toronto: $92,300 to $ 142,300
