WorkSafeNB is seeking to fill a permanent position of Associate Legal Counsel. Reporting to the General Counsel Corporate Secretary, the Associate Legal Counsel is responsible for providing a full range of legal services to WorkSafeNB in all areas of the law as necessary. This includes providing advice, opinions, information, guidance and support on issues arising under the Workers' Compensation Act, the Firefighters' Compensation Act, the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission Act and privacy legislation. Associate Legal Counsel is responsible for undertaking and overseeing corporate issues as assigned by legal department staff and may represent WorkSafeNB before the Courts, as directed by General Counsel or Senior Legal Counsel.
Associate Legal Counsel supports the direction and management of external legal matters, including prosecutions under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, third-party litigation under the Workers' Compensation Act, and any matters before any level of court in New Brunswick, as directed by General Counsel or Senior Legal Counsel.
Salary And Hours Of Work:
- Hours of work are those required to perform the assigned tasks but shall not be less than 35 hours per week.
- Pay Scale: $103,259.70 to $121,482.00 annually.
- Provide and manage advice, opinions, and provide direction to WorkSafeNB staff regarding matters of legislative interpretation and application of Acts and Regulations - To oversee, support and / or lead the management of activities related to Workers' Compensation Act (WCA), the Firefighters' Compensation Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Workplace Health and Safety Compensation Commission Act (WHSCC), privacy legislation, commercial law, including providing advice and opinions, overseeing, and supporting legislation review and supporting the management of external legal matters as directed by General Counsel or Senior Legal Counsel.
- Legal action Management (Prosecution and Litigation) - Manage assigned third-party litigation files under the Workers' Compensation Act and prosecutions under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, as assigned by Senior Legal Counsel or Legal Counsel.
- Provide Legal Support Services - To provide essential and often complex legal support services to WorkSafeNB in the management of legal matters impacting WorkSafeNB.
- Work Collaboratively with other departments - To foster, build and maintain relationships at all levels of the organization, outside parties, and oversight bodies to ensure WorkSafeNB's legislative compliance.
- Oversee and Manage Commercial Contract - To manage activities related to Commercial contracts prior to hand-off of contract to the business, while ensuring WorkSafeNB's compliance with laws and regulations, including public procurement requirements, and adherence to corporate policies.
- Law degree.
- 1-3 years of experience in related roles.
- Preference for public sector focused legal experience supporting a public sector organization.
- Familiarity with related regulatory issues.
- The ability to work collaboratively, independently, strategically, and with sound judgment.
- A broad knowledge of WorkSafeNB's business and a broad knowledge of various areas of law, such as knowledge in Occupational Health and Safety legislation, Workers' Compensation legislation, Commercial law, Human Rights, etc.

Written and spoken competence in English is required. Written and spoken competence in French is considered an asset.

This is a hybrid position, and the successful candidate will be asked to work at head office in Saint John regularly based on the schedule. Your primary workspace will be from your in-home office, with the expectation of in-person meetings, for that reason, working from outside the province or country is not permissible.
