As an intern architect with our Strategic Infrastructure and Development Division, you will support and participate in the design of Build Nova Scotia projects including healthcare and strategic infrastructure projects. You will assist in Build Nova Scotia's programming, planning and pre-design activities. You will also assist in the review of design and consultant-prepared documentation. You may participate in the procurement of design and construction services. The Intern Architect will work closely with the Senior Architect, Healthcare, the Director of Technical Services, project manager(s) and clients. You will develop an understanding of project budgets, schedule, quality and scope and the policies, design documents, OH&S regulations and all applicable codes and standards. During project construction, the Intern Architect will maintain familiarity with the progress and quality of construction.
The Intern architect will work with Technical Services which is a team of architects, engineers and designers who work collaboratively on strategic infrastructure projects to achieve the goals and quality requirements of our clients.
This position will work under the general supervision of the Senior Architect, Healthcare and report to the Director of Technical Services.
- Support the work of various projects, including the design and implementation phases of healthcare and strategic infrastructure projects.
- Understanding the definition of project scope and the gathering of information from stakeholders to ensure project success.
- Assist in the review of programming, planning and pre-design activities.
- Develop relationships with various groups of internal and external stakeholders.
- The Intern Architect works in a team environment, coordinating and supporting a multi-disciplinary internal team to review and ensure budget, schedule and quality.
- The position ensures adherence to the National Building Code, our internal standards, and conformance with Authorities Having Jurisdictions.
- The Intern Architect will participate in multiple projects and may assist in the preparation of project deliverables.
- May perform other related duties as assigned.
- A university Degree in Architecture from an accredited school. You have a current intern architect status (enrolled in the IAP program), in good standing, with the Nova Scotia Association of Architects (NSAA) or are working towards licensure in Canada utilizing a process recognized by the NSAA.
- Strong planning, technical and design skills with respect to building design projects particularly institutional buildings is required.
- General understanding and knowledge of the following is required:
o building codes and design standards.
o project budgeting and financial planning.
o consultant and construction contracts, the tendering process and construction administration.
- The Intern Architect is a self-motivated individual who works well both independently and as an effective and engaged team player in a cross-functional team.
- Professional oral and written communication skills for collaborating with staff, other government agencies, consultants, contractors and the public.
- Well-developed planning and organizational skills, coupled with the ability to multi-task and adapt in this fast-paced environment with multiple priorities.
- Maintaining a professional and courteous disposition and hold a high standard of communication with stakeholder groups.
- Experience with or knowledge of the tools and standards used by consulting Architects today including AutoCAD and/or BIM, MSOffice Suite, sustainable building guidelines including LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), Passive House and the National Energy Code.
- Experience or knowledge of various project delivery methods including design-bid-build, design-build and construction management is considered an asset.
Pay Grade: NSL-10
Salary Range: $2396.07- $2886.82 Bi-Weekly
Salary Placement: The placement of a new hire into the salary range is based on an objective salary rating process. This process will assess the knowledge, skills, experiences and overall qualifications of a candidate to determine appropriate placement. Each pay grade has established steps, and new hires cannot exceed certain maximums which are outlined in the Compensation Framework.
