We are currently looking to fill the position of Co-op Environmental Scientist, to join our Environmental Services team in a temporary position, reporting to the Manager, Environment, T&D. Key elements of this role include:
As part of the Environmental Services team the Co-op Environmental Scientist will gain exposure to environmental aspects of electricity generation across Nova Scotia Power, including generation and transmission & distribution. You will work with Environmental Scientist and Engineer team members, internal departments, and external contractors in providing this support.
You will also provide support on environmental science related to regulatory (environmental) approvals and monitoring programs.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Supporting environmental monitoring, studies, and compliance programs at NSPI assets and facilities;
- Review contractor safety requirements and prepare associated safety documentation.
- Providing field support during emergency response related to oil and chemical releases and managing the remediation of impacted sites.
- Fieldwork including site visits, the collection of soil, groundwater, and sediment samples, and on-site supervision of contractors.
- Supporting the environmental studies and regulatory approvals in relation to design, construction, and commissioning of new projects;
- Data collection, analysis and preparation of reports for regulatory departments/agencies in support of programs and activities across NSPI;
- Review, interpret, and provide document control for historical contaminated sites files on existing SharePoint sites.
These skills will make you successful:
- Pursuing a Bachelor's Degree of Science (preferably in Biology/Ecology) or a Bachelor of Engineering degree.
- Strong written and oral communication.
- Strong computer and analytical skills.
- The position is predominantly based out of the Halifax office; however, a portion of the work involving fieldwork may require travel across Nova Scotia.
- You possess a high level of professionalism, a strong work ethic, and demonstrated communication, problem solving, and analytical skills.
- You are a self-motivated team player with the ability to manage multiple tasks and make independent decisions in a timely manner.
- You hold a valid Nova Scotia Driver's License.
