Our employees are at the heart of what we do. We're looking for passionate and performance-focused people - people who want to make a difference for our customers and who share our values.
Key Responsibilities:
Protection and Control Design Engineer specializing in power utility design. This role encompasses all phases of engineering work, from conceptual development and prefeasibility studies through detailed design, budgeting, work order preparation, procurement, construction support, inspection, testing, and commissioning of protection and control systems. Extensive experience in major hydroelectric facilities (e.g., Churchill Falls) is highly preferred. Applicants must clearly demonstrate equivalent expertise in machine protection, unit control interfaces, and the integration of P&C systems within day-to-day plant operations.
Acting as a plant engineer, your work will involve all aspects of protection and control engineering design and technical support, including, but not limited to:
- Providing specialized engineering leadership for protection, control, and relay systems to ensure the safe, reliable operation of the Churchill Falls plant as well as its control structures and balance of plant assets associated with generation.
- Designing, reviewing, and maintaining protection and control systems. This involves developing machine-specific protection and managing relay settings and logic diagrams.
- Providing expert technical support for Operations and Maintenance. This includes troubleshooting P&C issues and performing root cause analysis on system events using Sequence of Event (SOE) records.
- Preparing capital budget proposals, work orders, and technical justifications for P&C infrastructure renewals and upgrades.
- Troubleshooting real-time plant issues with P&C technicians to ensure the reliability of the plant and to ensure system events are analyzed to ensure casual factors are identified and remedial actions are identified.
- Supporting commissioning, testing, and outage activities.
- Developing and maintaining P&C design standards and technical documentation.
What We're Looking For:
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- The ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with operations, maintenance, and project teams.
- A proactive, solution-oriented approach with demonstrated sound judgment and decision-making ability.
- A strong commitment to NL Hydro's vision, core values, and guiding principles.
You may also provide technical directions to junior engineers, technologists, or drafters on specific projects, and occasionally supervise temporary staff or contractors on-site.
What You'll Need:
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from a recognized university, with special emphasis on Electrical power systems.
- A minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible and relevant experience related to this type of work.
- Membership or eligibility for membership with the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL).
- Familiarity with Canadian Electrical Code, CSA, ANSI, and IEEE Standards.
- Specific experience in the electric utility or power generation industry is considered an asset.
- Strong computer literacy, including engineering and analytical software applications relevant to the discipline.
- Valid driver's license required.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Work is normally assigned to an office environment but will frequently require inspection of equipment during manufacture and on-site visits to operational facilities.
