Senior Geotechnical Engineer

We are seeking a full-time Senior Geotechnical Engineer in our Fredericton, New Brunswick office. The successful candidate will work with multidisciplinary teams on unique and challenging projects across Atlantic Canada. This role offers continued professional development in the technical and management fields.

About Us

At GEMTEC, we offer something different. We're an employee-owned, 400-person multidisciplinary consulting firm—not too big, not too small. We're large enough to compete head-to-head with publicly traded engineering giants, but still small enough to maintain the culture and flexibility of a close-knit team.

Our size and hands-on management style let us move quickly, embrace new opportunities, and empower our people to shape their own careers—without getting lost in corporate bureaucracy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work on a myriad of projects spanning roads, bridges, mining, tunnelling and dams, etc.
  • Work collaboratively with other GEMTEC offices, particularly for larger and multi-disciplinary assignments.
  • Coordinate and manage geotechnical programs, including field investigations, geotechnical analysis and design, and report preparation for highways, roads, bridges, buildings, marine and municipal infrastructure, land development, geotechnical instrumentation, mines and dams.
  • Complete geotechnical design for shallow and deep foundations, retaining structures, embankment dams, roadway embankments, railways, excavation support systems, tunnels, trenchless construction, staged embankment construction, and ground improvement methods.
  • Perform project management functions, including proposal preparation, budget estimation, scheduling, scope management, project summary report preparation, maintaining quality throughout the project, and implementing improvements.
  • Mentor junior staff.
  • Adhere to health and safety protocols, promoting a safe working environment.
  • Manage projects across Atlantic Provinces
  • Manage contractors and subcontractors
  • Other duties as required (communicate with clients, contractors and internal teams, implement quality control procedures, identify and manage risks).

Benefits & Perks:

  • Full-time (37.5 hours per week)
  • Complete health & dental coverage including vision, paramedical services, and Teladoc
  • Retirement planning made easier with a 5% employer match on your contributions
  • Paid time off (vacation and sick days) plus Employee & Family Assistance Program when you need it
  • Office year-end closure (paid time off between Christmas and the New Year)

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree in Geotechnical Engineering (Civil or Geological Engineering programs may also be suitable) from a recognized university. A Master's or Doctorate degree is considered an asset.
  • Possess at least 15 years of post-graduate experience in civil, geological, mining engineering, with a focus on geotechnical engineering.
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills in English, strong organizational abilities, and the capacity to manage and prioritize multiple assignments simultaneously, ensuring the delivery of quality work on time and within budget.
  • Have experience in geotechnical design for roads, bridges, dams, buildings, tunneling, etc.
  • Be proficient in geotechnical software applications such as Slope/W, Seep/W, Sigma/W, Settle3D, FLAC, PLAXIS or similar.
  • Be a licensed Professional Engineer in Canada and be (or eligible to become) a Registered Professional Engineer with APEGNB.
  • Be motivated to provide excellent client service and enjoy working in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Have experience with and the ability to make informed decisions regarding intrusive and non-intrusive field investigations, basic and advanced laboratory testing, and material characterization.
  • Be experienced in field investigation techniques such as CPT, SPT, and their application in static and seismic design.
  • Valid driver's license and have access to a personal vehicle for work related travel.
