Job Details:
The Internal Audit Student supports planning and performing internal audits. This includes supporting the development of audit objectives, criteria, scope, conducting fieldwork, preparing draft reports and recommendations to improve the effectiveness of governance, risk management, and control processes. The Internal Audit student will work in a team environment to complete engagements approved by the Audit and Risk Committee in the annual audit plan.
This is a summer term position for approximately four months, May - August 2026. Hours of work will be Monday to Friday, approximately 8:30am - 4:30pm. Travel around the province will be required.
Reporting Structure
Reports to: Director, Internal Audit
Essential Responsibilities
- Support the execution of the annual internal audit plan approved by the Audit and Risk Committee, through assurance and advisory work
- Assist in the planning of engagements including defining objectives, criteria, scope, and designing procedures
- Conduct fieldwork, assessing the design and effectiveness of internal controls, identify control weaknesses, and recommend improvements resulting from independent assurance work
- Conduct risk assessments identifying operational and enterprise risks relevant to approved internal audit engagements
- Assist in preparing audit reports that summarize findings, conclusions, and recommendations for management and the Audit and Risk Committee
- Ensure work is conducted efficiently, with due professional care, and in accordance with established audit standards
- Maintain collaborative working relationships with management, employees, manufacturers, and other stakeholders as required, to support the internal audit function
- Travel around Nova Scotia
Secondary Responsibilities
- Develop skills in risk assessments, data analysis, communication and stakeholder engagement
- Perform other related duties as assigned
As a qualified candidate, you will have:
- Enrolled in a program of study focused on Business
- Administration, Commerce, Accounting or another related field (ideally in second year or higher)
- An interest in pursuing a career in internal audit, or risk management
- Excellent communication skills
- Strong attention to detail and organization skills
As an ideal candidate you will also have:
- Experience in a retail environment
- Experience in an office environment
- Knowledge of risk management practices
- Valid NS driver's license with ability to produce a clear Driver's Abstract and access to reliable transportation
An alternate combination of education and experience may be considered equivalen
