Working collaboratively with supervisors, managers, and the broader safety and health team, the Advisor helps address workplace health and safety concerns effectively, strengthen organizational risk management practices, and foster a robust health and management system. The focus of the Health and Safety Advisor position is on the identification and characterization of occupational health hazards for the prevention of occupational disease.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develops, implements, evaluates, reviews, and updates health and safety programs, practices, procedures and strategies to ensure alignment with the Health & Safety Management System and identified trends and risks, with a focus on programs relating to occupational health and hygiene.
- Conducts thorough assessments of the workplace to identify and characterize occupational health hazards, including ergonomic, biological, chemical and physical hazards, and make recommendations on control measures to mitigate those risks.
- Works collaboratively with the Occupational Health and Hygiene team to support initiatives related to musculoskeletal injury prevention including conducting physical (job) demands analysis, ergonomic assessments, MSI prevention training and incident investigation.
- Supports other activities of the corporate safety and health team as needed, including assisting with the health and safety monitoring plan through coordination and organization of workplace audits, inspections, and investigations of health and safety concerns and incidents, to ensure Hydro is in compliance with relevant health and safety regulations and standards, the management system requirements, and best practices.
- Creates and provides education and training for employees on workplace health and safety issues and practices.
- Assists the Safety and Health team in coordination, organization, planning and communication of programs, initiatives and activities that aim to promote overall employee health, safety and well-being (e.g., Safety & Health Summit, SHE Week, Injury Prevention Campaign, Health and Wellness activities, Incident Lessons Learned, etc.).
- Works with other members of the Safety and Health team to advance Hydro's health and safety technology strategy by identifying software solutions to improve data capture, tracking and trending, evidence-based decision making, and ultimately health and safety performance.
What We're Looking For:
- The ideal candidate would possess a mix of formal health and safety compliance knowledge with proven ability to conduct in-depth ergonomic assessments to identify and mitigate ergonomic risks, as well as knowledge and understanding of the return to work/accommodation process.
- Experience completing Physical (Job) Demands Analysis and other ergonomic interventions in the workplace would be an asset.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in workplace health and safety legislation, standards, and best practices.
- Must have great organizational and time management skills, as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills is required to effectively interact with a variety of personnel and other industry partners, both internal and external.
What You'll Need:
- University graduation with a Bachelor's degree in Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, combined with graduation from a post-secondary institution with a degree/diploma in Occupational Health and Safety.
- Professional certification/designation/license (or eligible for), in one or more of the following: Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH), Canadian Certified Professional Ergonomist (CCPE), Certified Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Occupational Therapy, or Physiotherapy.
- A minimum of five (5)to seven (7)years of progressively responsible experience as a health and safety professional in high-risk industries.
