Organizational Overview

The Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture (NSFA) represents the interests of Nova Scotia's agricultural community. Today its members account for well over 90% of all agricultural production in Nova Scotia and brings together farm businesses representing all aspects of primary agriculture in the province. The NSFA tackles policy issues that impact the competitive and sustainable nature of the industry and takes an active role in supporting registered farms through delivery of programs and services.

Position Overview

The NSFA is seeking a Communications Coordinator as a full-time (35 hours per week) employee. The Communications Coordinator plays a vital role in amplifying the voice of the organization and promoting the value of agriculture to farmers, industry partners, and the public. This dynamic role requires a creative communicator with strong writing, design, event planning, and digital media skills can manage multiple projects and meet diverse communication needs. The Communications coordinator will create content for a range of audiences and purposes including building public trust in agriculture, creating resources for farmers and industry stakeholders, and for our Council of Leaders.

Working closely with internal teams, the Communications Coordinator will manage and update the organization's communication platforms, develop engaging content, support promotional campaigns, and lead in the coordination and planning of our public engagement events. With a passion for storytelling and agriculture, the Coordinator will contribute to building awareness, supporting strategic priorities, and ensuring consistent and impactful messaging across all channels.

Key Responsibilities

Communications and Branding

  • Implement NSFA and associated organizations brand and communications strategies to promote programs and initiatives.
  • Develop resources for both public and farmer facing audiences on relevant topics and issues.
  • Develop engaging content for our online channels for both our farmer and public audiences.
  • Support the development and delivery of awareness campaigns such as We Talk. We Grow., One Road, Canadian Agricultural Safety Week, career promotions.
  • Manage and coordinate NSFA's electronic newsletters including maintaining our contact list.
  • Stay up to date on industry trends and best practices in promotional and outreach strategies.
  • Manage and grow our social media presence on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn for all organizational profiles and accounts.
  • Manage and maintain all websites under the NSFA umbrella.

Event Planning

  • Coordinate and execute the organization's public facing ag-education events (e.g. Farm Tour, Canada Ag Day celebration etc.).
  • Support the coordination of events, workshops, and meetings (e.g. Farmers' Forum, Spring Member Social, Cultivate Your Future Conference, NSYF Summer Social).
  • Represent the organization at tradeshows, events, conferences, and meetings to raise awareness and build networks.
  • Work with NSFA teams to develop and execute program specific campaigns to increase awareness and engagement.

Media Relations

  • Support the internal preparation and response to media inquiries, development of key messaging, press releases, and public statements.

Administration

  • Analyze and synthesize feedback and metrics to inform reporting, future strategies, and activities.
  • Coordinate project budgets and expenditures.
  • Engage in other activities as needed to support the success of the NSFA and industry.
  • Support front-desk administration and respond to member inquiries.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or diploma in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field or equivalent.
  • Experience in a communications role, preferably in the non-profit or agriculture sector.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in social media management and digital marketing tools.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience with event planning.
  • Experience with graphic design tools (e.g. Canva, Adobe Creative Suite).
  • Experience with website management and websites (e.g. WordPress, SquareSpace).
  • Creative thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Passion for agriculture.

Compensation

  • Starting annual salary between $53,000 and $59,000.
  • 3 weeks of vacation annually plus winter Holiday closure.
