The Geriatric Emergency Department Team consists of specially trained interprofessional team members whose goal is to help patients get well quickly so that they can return to the community.

Job Summary
The Clinical Physiotherapist II provides physiotherapy services to the Emergency Department at Health Science Centre with flexibility for coverage throughout the site. The Physiotherapist II will provide supervision and leadership to Physiotherapist I?s and to Rehabilitation Assistants. The Clinical Physiotherapist II will be responsible to precept Physiotherapy students and offer other clinical education experience to students within NLHS.

The Physiotherapist II is responsible and accountable for the provision of competent, safe, and ethical physiotherapy services within the Eastern Zones of NL Health Services. The primary purpose of this position is to apply advanced clinical knowledge and skills in the specialty area of the care of older adults presenting to the Emergency Department with complex geriatric conditions, chronic illnesses, and acute medical conditions. The Clinical Physiotherapist II will provide detailed assessments, interventions, and education to clients and caregivers to enable a safe and successful transition to the community. The Physiotherapist?s range of practice will include the prevention, assessment, and treatment of areas such as mobility, balance, strength, coordination, and fitness. Proficiency in the use of Geriatric- appropriate outcome measures to assist in clinical decision-making is required. The Physiotherapist II is an integral member of the interdisciplinary team, building respectful relationships with clients, interprofessional team members, and others involved in the systems in which they work. The Physiotherapist II works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team in completing their appropriate portion of the Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment, developing and implementing integrated care plans, and facilitating smooth transitions in care. Weekend coverage and/or on-call service is required on a rotational basis.

In addition to the clinical role, the Physiotherapist II will lead the development of physiotherapy services for the Geriatric Emergency Departments in collaboration with the Health of Older Adults Strategic Health Network and Canadian Best Practice recommendations. Duties will include input into program and policy development, project development, quality initiatives, planning and evaluation activities of the clinical service and participating in evidence-based practice. The Physiotherapist II is responsible for consulting and advising other Physiotherapist staff assigned to the program, providing direction and leadership as required to follow specific protocols in the Emergency Department. The successful candidate will work with the clinical team, including physicians, nursing, Allied Health team, and support staff to implement best practice recommendations for seniors in the Emergency Department. They will complete all required education for staff in the Emergency Department, as well as participate in available specialty training in their specific field. They are also responsible for implementing change at a more global level by educating and networking across programs and sites throughout the province. They may be involved in developing and delivering presentations and education material for relevant audiences, which may include patients/families, direct patient care providers, and/or other Physiotherapists across the province.

This position reports to the Division Manager for the Emergency Department, and maintains accountability to the Physiotherapy Professional Practice Consultant for professional integrity and practice issues

Occasionally uses hand tools and equipment.
Time pressures and interruptions are experienced with little control over work pace.
Hours of work may require evening and weekend coverage on a rotational basis.

Job Qualifications
Graduation from an approved/recognized School of Physiotherapy is required.
Current registration with the Newfoundland and Labrador College of Physiotherapists is required.
A minimum of three years' experience within the last five working as a Clinical Physiotherapist with adults is required.
Previous leadership experience is an asset.
Demonstrated knowledge of the breadth and complexity of the care of older adults.
Demonstrated effective communication, both verbally and in writing with co-workers, patients and their families in both a one-on-one and/or group environment.
Effectively translated and communicated knowledge in the specialized area of Physiotherapy practice to others.
Demonstrated proven leadership skills.
Demonstrated ability to provide supervision, coaching, mentorship and training to Physiotherapists, Rehabilitation Assistants , and students.
Demonstrated ability to prioritize caseload and patient needs.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as a member of an interprofessional team.
A satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is required.
