Responsibilities

What you will be doing…

  • The Lead Hand - Security position reports directly to the Facilities Manager and has a functional reporting relationship to the Regional Public Safety Supervisor.
  • This position will support the safety and security of NSCC campuses by performing regular patrols, monitoring access points, and assisting students, staff, and visitors. The role also includes providing day-to-day supervision and coordination of contract security staff to ensure duties are carried out professionally across the campuses. Responsibilities include responding to incidents, reporting safety concerns, conducting routine safety checks, conduct routine/preliminary investigations and maintaining accurate logs. By maintaining a visible, approachable presence and supporting contract staff, this position helps foster a secure, respectful, and service-focused campus environment.
Qualifications

Qualifications and Occupational Experience:

  • The minimum educational qualification for this position is a high school diploma or GED. A college diploma would be considered an asset.
  • You have a minimum of 2 years (full time equivalent) of recent and related occupational experience in Security.
  • Occupational experience that includes Customer Service, Investigations, and Documentation would be considered an asset.
  • Prior experience working in a post-secondary institution, hospital, or similarly complex institutional setting would be considered an asset.
  • Incident Command System (ICS) 100 certification would be considered an asset.
  • You are familiar with and comfortable using computer applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite, E-mail, CCTV and access control systems.
  • You have demonstrated experience providing safe, reliable, and customer focused security services in a public environment.
  • You possess a valid Intermediate First Aid certification, and Automated External Defibrillator with child enforcement certification.
  • A valid Nova Scotia Driver's License is required for this position.

  • You demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in upholding high standards of performance, professionalism, and accountability within all aspects of security operations, while actively fostering a positive and proactive safety culture.
  • You show a strong commitment to campus community involvement, by actively participating in campus events, orientations, and safety awareness activities to build trust with students, staff, and visitors.
  • You have a proven ability to coordinate emergency response efforts, including fire alarms, medical incidents, lockdowns, and evacuations.
  • You have a proven ability to handle confrontational or sensitive situations professionally.
  • You are skilled in writing detailed reports, maintaining shift logs, and managing scheduling/staff coverage.
  • You are able to meet all physical demands of the role, including sustained walking, responding to emergencies, wearing the assigned uniform, and wearing required PPE (approximately 7 lbs) when operational needs require it.
