Starting Salary: $72,328 ($42.79/hour)

Duration: August 31, 2026 (possibility of extension)

The Registered Nurses' Union Newfoundland & Labrador (RNU) is the official trade union for 6,000 registered nurses (RNs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) in Newfoundland and Labrador. Over the years, RNU has transformed from an organization focused mainly on negotiating contracts into a union that champions to protect the health care system, the role of the RN, NPs, and the rights of patients, clients and residents. Through advocacy, research and collective bargaining, the RNU has worked to improve the health care system and enhance the livelihood, safety and well-being of our membership.

Reporting to the Director of Corporate Services, the accountant serves as the organization's accounting resource and is responsible for all day?to?day financial operations of RNU. This role manages accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll processing, general ledger maintenance, and financial reporting. The accountant ensures compliance with RNU policies, GAAP, and established internal controls, while providing accurate, timely financial information to senior leadership, the Executive, the Board of Directors, and external auditors.

The accountant also contributes to the development and implementation of financial policies, supports strategic financial planning, and provides advice on complex financial matters to ensure effective and responsible stewardship of organizational resources.

Financial Operations & Reporting

· Manage full?cycle accounting, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll entries, and general ledger maintenance.

· Prepare monthly, quarterly, and year?end financial statements, trial balances, and internal financial reports.

· Perform monthly bank, credit card, and balance sheet reconciliations; investigate and resolve discrepancies.

· Maintain the accuracy and integrity of financial records in accordance with GAAP and internal controls.

· Review and process approved payment vouchers, travel claims, journal entries, encumbrances, and requisitions for compliance with RNU policies.

Budgeting, Forecasting & Analysis

· Assist with annual and monthly budgeting processes and prepare cash flow projections.

· Monitor cash flow, expenditures, bank activity, and account performance; provide recommendations to management.

· Support capital acquisition analysis, inventory controls, and financial planning initiatives.

Payroll & Employment?Related Reporting

· Prepare employer documentation including T4s, ROEs, workers' compensation reporting, and benefits-related submissions.

· Ensure accurate payroll data entry and compliance with legislation and internal policy.

Audit Support & Compliance

· Prepare audit working papers and financial documentation for external auditors.

· Recommend improvements to accounting procedures, internal controls, and financial systems.

· Contribute to the development and maintenance of financial policies and guidelines.

Additional Duties

· Maintain petty cash and ensure appropriate cash management.

· Provide financial information to leadership, the Executive, Board Committees, and other stakeholders as required.

· Offer occasional administrative support during peak periods or staff absences.

Qualifications

· 3-5 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a unionized or non?profit environment.

· Diploma in Business or Accounting (minimum requirement).

· CPA designation or near completion is considered an asset.

· Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (formulas, pivot tables, data analysis).

· Experience with Sage 50 (AP, AR, GL, Payroll).

· Training or experience in payroll administration.

· Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
