In this role, you will:
- Provide transportation to eligible clients (older adults, disabled and/or physically/cognitively impaired clients and their personal companions/attendants, as required for medical appointments, social outings, compassionate visits, shopping and day programs.
- Aid clients to onboard/de-board the vehicle including those clients utilizing mobility devices (i.e., pushing/maneuvering wheelchairs, folding walkers and safely stowing during trip as needed).
- Operate, store and secure a variety of mobility equipment devices such as wheelchairs and walkers while transporting clients.
- Update client files including change of address, placing clients on hold, updating household member information daily using database.
- Operate the vehicle safely and report any vehicle and/or radio maintenance concerns/problems/needs to the Supervisor.
- Report any observed or potential occupational health and safety hazards for workers or clients.
- Report incidents involving clients immediately.
- Maintain and safeguard log books (and any documents or equipment that contains personal health information) for seamless communication to supervisors and/or authorities if required.
- Conduct mandatory MTO regulated circle checks daily on vehicle(s) noting vehicle defects, topping up vehicle fluids (e.g. gas and windshield wiper fluids) in a timely manner.
What we are looking for:
- Minimum of 1-2 years of experience and a 1-2 year college diploma or post-secondary certification or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must be 25 years of age or older to drive Red Cross vehicles, have a Province of Ontario, Class 'G" Driver's License with a minimum two years driving experience. Experience driving commercial vehicles, cube/cargo vans are an asset
- Good driving record (clean CVOR/driver's abstract) and familiarity with locations of major city streets, able to use or learn technical devices for position.
- Must be familiar with requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations, knowledge of safe transport practices, reporting incidents, equipment transport, for the safe performance of duties.
- Previous experience driving and working with elderly population are considered an asset.
- Basic computer skills or knowledge (Microsoft Office Suite).
- Ability to apply relevant municipal road safety legislation.
- Ability to route plan and navigate various road options using GPS systems, maps, etc., to ensure smooth and safe rides.
- Ability to apply standard methods and select amongst options to resolve routine problems.
- Ability to demonstrate compassion, empathy and understanding for individuals with differing cognitive and physical abilities
Working Conditions:
- High tolerance for traffic congestion and possible adverse weather conditions.
- Occasional requirement to lift very heavy objects weighing greater than 20kg (e.g. wheelchairs) to perform the requirements of the role.
- Regular requirement for prolonged sitting in a restricted position with infrequent breaks in order to perform the requirements of the role.
- Changes related to assigned client rides, working hours and work location are frequently made on short notice. The incumbent is required to be flexible in working non-traditional hours and in accepting changes to their work schedule and location.
- Due to working with individuals of differing cognitive and physical abilities, may occasionally experience unpleasant physical environments and clients.
