Are you an experienced Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer looking to progress your career? We're looking for an Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer to join our growing team. We are open to filling this position in our Ottawa, Ontario
office.

At GEMTEC, we offer something different. We're an employee-owned, 400-person multidisciplinary consulting firm—not too big, not too small. We're large enough to compete head-to-head with publicly traded engineering giants, but still small enough to maintain the culture and flexibility of a close-knit team.

Our size and hands-on management style let us move quickly, embrace new opportunities, and empower our people to shape their own careers—without getting lost in corporate bureaucracy.

You're an ideal candidate if you have:

  • A bachelor's degree in Geotechnical Engineering (Civil) from a recognized university; a Master's or PhD is considered an asset.
  • At least 5+ years of post?graduate geotechnical engineering experience, including design work for roads, bridges, dams, buildings, tunneling, and related infrastructure.
  • Strong proficiency in industry?standard geotechnical software such as Slope/W, Seep/W, Sigma/W, Settle3D, FLAC, PLAXIS, or equivalent.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, paired with strong organizational abilities and the capacity to manage multiple priorities while delivering high?quality work on time and within budget.
  • Experience conducting and interpreting intrusive and non?intrusive field investigations, including CPT, SPT and laboratory testing programs.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in Canada and eligibility for licensure with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
  • Motivation to provide exceptional client service and enthusiasm for collaborating within a multi?disciplinary team environment.
  • Experience with MTO foundations investigations and design (considered an asset).

A typical day on the job might look like:

  • Coordinating and managing geotechnical programs, including planning and executing field investigations, completing geotechnical analyses and designs, and preparing reports for highways, roads, bridges, buildings, municipal infrastructure, and land development projects.
  • Completing geotechnical analyses (i.e., slope stability assessment, settlement of soft soils, lateral earth pressures, pile capacities, seismic response, etc.)
  • Completing geotechnical design for shallow and deep foundations, retaining structures, roadway embankments, railways, excavation support systems, tunnels, trenchless installations, staged embankment construction and ground improvement techniques.
  • Collaborating closely with other GEMTEC offices on larger or multi?disciplinary assignments to deliver integrated project solutions.
  • Performing project management tasks such as preparing proposals, estimating budgets, developing schedules, managing scope, preparing project summary reports, and maintaining quality throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Mentoring junior staff, providing technical guidance, and supporting their professional growth.
  • Promoting a safe working environment by adhering to health and safety protocols.
  • Adhering to all company policies.
  • Other duties as required.

The good stuff you get:

  • Full-time (37.5 hours per week)
  • Complete health & dental coverage including vision, paramedical services, and Teladoc
  • Retirement planning made easier with a 5% employer match on your contributions
  • Paid time off (vacation and sick days) plus Employee & Family Assistance Program when you need it
  • Office year-end closure (paid time off between Christmas and the New Year)

Your background and what you bring:

  • A solid foundation of technical expertise developed through at least 5+ years of geotechnical engineering experience, with demonstrated competency in both field and office-based work.
  • Proven ability to lead and execute intrusive and non-intrusive field investigations, interpret results, oversee advanced laboratory testing and material characterization, and translate findings into practical engineering recommendations.
  • Strong analytical and design skills supported by experience using geotechnical modeling and analysis software such as Slope/W, Seep/W, Sigma/W, Settle3D, FLAC, and PLAXIS.
  • Effective project management capabilities, including budget management, scheduling, proposal development, and maintaining quality deliverables.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in Canada and eligibility for PEO licensure.
  • Excellent communication skills, enabling the preparation of clear, concise reports and successful collaboration with clients, colleagues, and project teams.
  • A commitment to client service, teamwork, and continuous improvement, with the ability to thrive in a dynamic, multi?disciplinary consulting environment.
  • Experience with MTO geotechnical requirements and foundations design (an asset).
  • Valid driver's license and have access to a personal vehicle for work related travel.
