The Opportunity

As a valued member of our Protection and Controls Engineering Team at our Kenmount Road location, you will be responsible for:

  • Ensuring the Company's protection and control systems follow utility best practices to provide a safe and reliable environment for the Company's employees, customers and equipment.
  • Provide oversight and support in relation to the design and operational maintenance of transmission, substation, and distribution protection and control systems. This includes the St. John's Teleprotection System and Under Frequency Load Shedding Scheme.
  • Lead the planning, design, construction and commissioning of protection and control upgrade projects. This includes procurement and installation of equipment, the design of associated protection and control systems, and the development of protection & monitoring SLDs, associated electrical schematics and protection panel layouts.
  • Perform protection coordination studies and develop protective device settings based on these studies. Commission substation refurbishment and modernization upgrades or load growth projects.
  • Support protection relay configuration and logic development. Provide onsite supervision for substation capital projects.
  • Perform switching tasks in substations.
  • Create, review and approve protection plans for capital project and equipment maintenance activities. Create and approve switching orders for substation projects.
  • Review protection and control system philosophies, guidelines and schemes to ensure continual improvement and innovation in the design and implementation of protection and control systems.
  • Ensure that all engineering work meets applicable industry standards for safe and reliable operation of the electrical system.

Your qualifications include:

  • Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology.
  • You must hold and maintain a valid motor vehicle driver's license.
  • Exposure to electric utility protection and control schemes and equipment is preferred.
  • Strong written and communication skills.
  • Strong technical, analytical, critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to manage third party relationships.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team-oriented environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and familiar with AutoCAD.
  • Strong commitment to safety and customer service.

There is a residency requirement for this position, whereby your primary residence must be within 40 km of the St. John's, Kenmount Road office.
