Staff Engineer, Guidewire Claims

Role Overview

The Staff Engineer, Guidewire Claims is an individual contributor responsible for providing enterprise?scale technical leadership and architectural stewardship across the Guidewire Claims platform. This role partners with senior business, product, engineering, and enterprise architecture leaders to define and evolve end?to?end technical strategy and solutions aligned with Guidewire Cloud and TD enterprise standards. Operating at Senior manager level, the Staff Engineer owns complex, high?impact problem spaces that span multiple teams and domains. The role leads through deep technical expertise, influence, and systems thinking, guiding multiple engineering pods without direct people management accountability. Success in this role is measured by platform health, architectural quality, risk reduction, developer productivity, and long?term sustainability of the Claims ecosystem. Guidewire ClaimCenter certification and relevant insurance experience are required.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

CUSTOMER

  • Act as a senior technical partner to business and product leaders by translating complex business strategies into scalable, resilient technical solutions.

  • Lead technical discovery and architecture definition for high?complexity, ambiguous, and cross?domain problem spaces within Claims.

  • Define, govern, and evolve architecture, design patterns, and integration approaches aligned to Guidewire Cloud, TD enterprise architecture, and security standards.

  • Ensure engineering solutions are designed to meet enterprise expectations for quality, performance, security, resiliency, and availability.

  • Serve as a trusted technical advisor, clearly articulating technical risks, trade?offs, and recommendations to senior technical and non?technical stakeholders.

  • Anticipate future business and platform needs to proactively influence technical direction and enable long?term Claims modernization.

SHAREHOLDER

  • Provide enterprise?level stewardship over architectural integrity and technical decision?making across the Claims domain.

  • Identify, assess, and mitigate strategic technical, operational, and security risks associated with platform evolution and large?scale delivery initiatives.

  • Lead and influence modernization efforts, including cloud adoption, automation, platform simplification, and reduction of technical debt.

  • Contribute to and shape TD enterprise engineering standards, reference architectures, and technical governance practices.

  • Act as the primary technical liaison with vendor platform providers (e.g., Guidewire), maintaining deep awareness of product roadmaps, constraints, and opportunities.

  • Support regulatory, audit, and risk partners by providing authoritative technical subject?matter expertise.

  • Balance near?term delivery pressures with long?term architectural sustainability, operational resilience, and cost effectiveness.

  • Provide senior?level technical mentorship and guidance to engineers across multiple pods and teams through:

    • Code, solution, and integration reviews

    • Architecture and design leadership

    • Knowledge sharing and technical coaching

  • Influence engineering practices at scale by advocating for DevOps, automation, cloud?native patterns, and operational excellence.

  • Partner with Engineering Managers to provide technical input into role expectations, capability development, and career growth frameworks.

  • Act as a change agent by challenging legacy approaches and enabling teams to deliver improved outcomes through stronger technical practices.

BREADTH & DEPTH

  • 10+ years of progressive software engineering experience, including 7+ years of deep hands?on experience with Guidewire ClaimCenter.

  • Demonstrated expertise in:

    • Guidewire Studio

    • Gosu, Java, or similar enterprise languages

    • APIs, web services, integration, and messaging patterns

  • Strong understanding of insurance claims processing, data flows, and regulatory considerations.

  • Proven experience delivering large?scale solutions in agile and/or product?based delivery models.

  • Cloud experience with AWS and/or Azure, including cloud?native and platform?as?a?service patterns.

  • Advanced understanding of CI/CD, DevOps, automation, observability, and operational readiness.

  • Exceptional analytical, systems?thinking, and problem?solving skills.

  • Proven ability to influence technical outcomes across teams and domains without formal authority.

EXPERIENCE AND / OR EDUCATION

  • Required: Guidewire ClaimCenter certification (or equivalent).

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Role Clarification

  • This is a Level 11 Staff Engineer role and a senior individual contributor position.

  • There is no direct people management or budget accountability.

  • Technical leadership is exercised through architecture ownership, influence, mentorship, and enterprise impact.

  • Performance is assessed based on technical outcomes, architectural quality, platform stability, risk reduction, and developer effectiveness.
