We have a new role for a Technical Writer working within our Engineering Department. We envision that this would be a more junior member of a seasoned team, offering you the ability to learn and grow.
Initially the role will consist of:
- Assisting with compliance documents and installation/ maintenance manuals for Sonar project requirements (Jira, MS Word)
- Creating Information Sheets and Field Modifications to support mainstream broadcast equipment (Jira, MS Word, Adobe Acrobat)
- Participating in Continuous Improvement activities, including AI initiatives (Jira, HTML, AI tools such as CoPilot)
Eventually the role will expand to:
- Creating technical instruction manuals to support custom systems (Jira, MS Word, Adobe Acrobat)
- Developing larger documentation suites (FrameMaker, Adobe Acrobat, HTML)
- Working with Drafting Team to develop graphics for manuals (EngVault, eDrawings, MS Teams)
The Technical Writing team serves as an internal service bureau for services that may include marketing, copywriting, technical editing, technical illustrations, USB creation, HTML page creation/editing, and computer-based training development;
The team performs the entire information product development process: gathering detailed requirements for information products, designs the information products, authors documents, conducts reviews, manages documentation releases and version control.
The ideal job-holder would, ideally, have a technical background in electronics, strong writing and editing skills. They would also have the ability to be able to understand how our products work and be able to present that information within the handbooks we produce for our products.
Candidates should have:
- Data gathering skills - conducting SME (subject matter expert) interviews;
- Ability to undertake formal document reviews - confidence to host and manage reviews, knowledge of standard formats and techniques for these reviews;
- FrameMaker: use of advanced properties in format tags, master page design and application, cross-references, book building, variables, graphics tools, hypertext, index tags, importing from PowerPoint, ability to generate Acrobat files from Framemaker;
- Acrobat: bookmark generation, file security;
- Jira & Confluence skills would be an advantage;
- Strong Microsoft office suite skills, template design;
- Proven self-management skills - reporting, time management, accountability, project estimates, organizational skills, problem-solving;
- Good presentation skills, including the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;
- Works as part of a team - ability to work effectively within a team as well as independently;
- Ensures accuracy and quality - ensures that work is done correctly, completely, consistently and to required standards.
The ability to obtain, and maintain, Controlled Goods clearance immediately is a requirement of this role (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident).
