The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking an individual to join the Forest Operations and Development Branch as a Tree Improvement Technician, at the Provincial Forest Nursery, in Island View.
As a member of the Tree Improvement Unit and reporting to the Coordinator, Tree Improvement, the successful candidate will be responsible for general maintenance and monitoring of tree improvement processes and activities. Responsibilities include the following: carrying out various greenhouse operations including seeding of tests, grafting, tagging, sorting of tests, and other related tasks; assisting with all aspects of tree breeding and related documentation including pollen collection and extraction, controlled crossing, collection of crosses, and scion collection; assisting with the establishment and maintenance of seed orchards, including planting grafts, and cone collection; and assisting with the establishment, measurement, and maintenance of genetic tests. Other related duties may be assigned as required.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: A high school diploma, or equivalent, a diploma from a recognized two-year Forest Technology Program, or equivalent; and a minimum of one (1) year of related post-diploma experience. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

ASSET QUALIFICATION(S): Preference may be given to candidates that demonstrate one or more of the following: post-diploma experience in a forest nursery environment; experience with tree improvement processes and procedures; experience with seed handling. Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be prepared to: work a 40-hour week; work extended hours and weekends when necessary to meet operational requirements; travel within the province on occasion; work with a high degree of independence and judgement; and possess a valid class 5 driver licence as issued by the Province of New Brunswick, or equivalent.
SALARY: $1,790 to $2,247 bi-weekly (based on a 40 hour work week)
NOTE: In the event that this competition poses difficulties in recruiting a qualified candidate, a covering off appointment at a lower level may be made. In that case, candidates with less than the required related years of experience may also be considered.
