The Heavy Duty Mechanic is responsible for performing inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair work on heavy construction equipment used in civil construction operations. This includes earthmoving, excavation, roadbuilding, and utility installation projects. Working both in the shop and in the field, the mechanic ensures all equipment is safe, reliable, and operating at optimal performance. The position requires strong diagnostic skills across mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems, as well as the ability to work independently on remote job sites while upholding Harbour Construction's high safety and quality standards.
The Work You'll Do
Equipment Maintenance and Repair
· Inspect, diagnose, and repair heavy civil construction equipment such as excavators, dozers, loaders, backhoes, graders, and dump trucks.
· Perform scheduled and preventive maintenance, including lubrication, oil and filter changes, and adjustments.
· Rebuild or replace major components (engines, transmissions, final drives, hydraulic pumps, and cylinders).
· Use computerized diagnostic tools, meters, and software to troubleshoot hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems.
· Perform function tests and calibrations after repairs to confirm proper operation.
Field Service and Support
· Respond to field service calls to diagnose and repair equipment breakdowns on active construction sites.
· Work independently in varying conditions while maintaining communication with the shop and project supervisors.
· Complete detailed service reports and maintain accurate maintenance records.
· Ensure equipment downtime is minimized through efficient repair planning and execution.
Safety and Compliance
· Follow all Harbour Construction and regulatory safety procedures and policies.
· Conduct job hazard assessments before starting any field work.
· Maintain a clean, organized work area and ensure tools and service vehicles meet safety standards.
· Report unsafe conditions, potential hazards, and near misses promptly.
Communication and Leadership
· Communicate effectively with the team members regarding equipment status and repair priorities.
· Provide mentorship and guidance to apprentices or junior technicians as needed.
· Support continuous improvement in maintenance practices and field service operations.
What We're Looking for
· Minimum five (5) years of previous experience as a Heavy Equipment or Field Service Mechanic in a civil construction or heavy equipment repair environment.
· Journeyperson Heavy Duty Equipment Technician (Red Seal) certification.
· Valid Class 5 driver's license with clean driving record.
