Job Summary
The Occupational Health and Safety Consultant ( Ergonomics Coordinator will lead in the development, coordination, implementation, maintenance and evaluation of provincial injury prevention strategies, programs, and policies designed to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injury to our healthcare workers. The position will report to the Manager of Employee Wellness and will provide guidance to the musculoskeletal injury prevention trainer(s). The consultant will liaise with the provincial Occupational Therapists and Kinesiologists from Employee Wellness regarding ergonomics programming. The consultant will also liaise with OH&S Coordinators to ensure the organization is compliant with current legislation, and provide a proactive response to safety in a healthcare environment.
The position includes coordinating the activities of the injury prevention trainer(s) and developing and evaluating the safe handling programs within all facets of our healthcare environment, from patient handling in our acute and long-term care environments, manual materials handling in our support services environments, as well as client handling in our community sector and paramedicine services. This also includes developing, implementing, and evaluating provincial ergonomic training programs; developing communication strategies for workplace ergonomics; and conducting indicator reporting and auditing to ensure compliance with work practices and policies. Furthermore, this position will be responsible for identifying, recommending and overseeing ergonomic equipment and liaising with various stakeholders on the design of a physical space and on the selection, installation, and maintenance of ergonomic equipment and furniture to limit potential exposure to ergonomic hazards on regional and provincial levels.
The consultant will provide program recommendations and consultation services to NLHS managers and staff, industry partner managers, government agencies, be a resource to OH&S Committees, and liaise closely with representatives from Workplace NL, unions and government departments.
Travel is a requirement of this position.
Job Qualifications
A bachelor?s degree or equivalent in Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, or Kinesiology is required.
Master's degree considered an asset.
Ergonomic certification through the Association of Canadian Ergonomists is an asset.
Experience
Five (5) years of experience working as an ergonomic specialist, health care setting preferred.
Competencies (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities)
Demonstrated knowledge of the provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and other related legislation.
Knowledge of current Ergonomic standards, requirements, and best practices.
A thorough knowledge of the strategic planning process and methods for successfully communicating and executing strategy.
Should possess superior interpersonal, leadership and written communication skills and a strong desire to work in a dynamic, challenging environment.
Ability to delegate responsibly and work with others, and coach a diverse group of people to develop their capabilities.
Demonstrated conceptual and analytical skills.
Superior time management and organizational skills.
Other
Registration with the relevant professional organization and licensing board is required.
A satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is required.
