Operating Technician

Join the future of circular plastics and advanced waste recovery

Sustane Technologies Inc. is a Canadian clean technology company pioneering circular plastics and advanced materials recovery. Our proprietary process transforms landfill-destined plastic and municipal solid waste into high-value recyclable plastics, chemical feedstocks, and low-carbon fuels, enabling true waste circularity at industrial scale. Where traditional waste systems downcycle or dispose, Sustane's breakthrough separation and conversion platform produces pure, market-ready outputs that were previously impossible to recover. The result: dramatically higher diversion rates, reduced reliance on landfills, and a scalable pathway to a circular economy for plastics and municipal waste.

Our first commercial facility in Chester, Nova Scotia is now operating at scale, processing up to 70,000 tonnes per year. We are expanding our operations team and seeking Operating Technicians to support the safe, continuous, and efficient operation of this next-generation circular materials plant.

The Role

As an Operating Technician at Sustane, you will take front-line responsibility for continuous shift operation of a highly automated facility. This role blends control room monitoring with hands-on field operations and inspection. You will work closely with the Power Engineering, Maintenance, and Engineering teams to ensure stable plant performance, rapid response to equipment issues, and continuous process improvement.

You will monitor and operate equipment including:

  • Thermal processing reactors
  • Air heaters and dryers
  • Cleaning and separation systems
  • Conveyors and material handling equipment
  • Pelletizers and plastics finishing systems
  • Pumps and auxiliary equipment
  • Automated process control systems

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day plant operations and process monitoring
  • Maintain logbooks and operational records
  • Monitor and troubleshoot operating equipment
  • Perform daily equipment inspections and field checks
  • Identify process deviations and support root-cause and corrective actions
  • Assist with preventative and routine maintenance activities
  • Issue work and test permits to maintenance personnel
  • Lock out equipment to ensure safe access for service and repair
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping and operational discipline
  • Operate forklifts or other mobile equipment as required
  • Adhere to all workplace safety policies, procedures, and regulations
  • Other duties as assigned by the Chief Power Engineer

Acceptable colour vision is required for control system monitoring. Ability to lift up to 40 lbs and work in areas requiring fall protection is necessary.

Shift Operations

This role involves continuous (shift) plant operations and requires flexibility in scheduling. While the facility is highly automated, proactive monitoring and rapid response to operating conditions are key to success.

What We're Looking For

  • Proven experience in an industrial or process-operations environment
  • Experience in energy, chemical, manufacturing, or materials facilities is an asset
  • Strong understanding of workplace health and safety practices
  • Comfort working with automated and computerized control systems
  • Excellent mobility and ability to work rotating shift schedules
  • A proactive mindset for teamwork, reliability, and continuous improvement

Compensation

  • Starting wage: $24.40/hour
  • Progression opportunities to $29.00/hour or higher based on experience and performance

Why Join Sustane

This is an opportunity to help operate one of the world's first commercial circular plastics and advanced waste-recovery facilities. You'll work with cutting-edge technology that transforms discarded materials into valuable new resources delivering real environmental impact every day. If you are excited by hands-on operations, advanced clean technology, and building a more sustainable future, we'd love to hear from you.
