The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Senior Mines Technologist to join our Mines Technical Services Team at Coleman Mine Sudbury, ON. This is a permanent position covered under the Collective Agreement between Vale and the Local 2020-05 United Steelworkers.

The Senior Mines Technologist is accountable to provide engineering services to support the mining plan at Coleman Mine. They are required to prepare detailed working layouts and technical support for mining operations and technical personnel. The primary focus for this position will be ventilation.

In this position you will:

  • Ventilation Design & Planning – Design main infrastructure (doors, vent controls, louvers, airlocks), create approval comments, select auxiliary fans/ducting, and assist with mid- to long-range ventilation packages.
  • Operational Support & Troubleshooting – Support vent specialists, validate blade angles, issue outage/ventilation letters, and coach techs on troubleshooting deficiencies.
  • Monitoring & Compliance – Perform P/Q surveys, legislative and system readings, advise on heat stress management, and maintain calibration and refuge station records.
  • Training & Mentorship – Mentor mine techs, provide in-field coaching, and deliver thermal management and JHSC ventilation presentations.
  • Fire & Emergency Preparedness – Develop and execute fire drills, report results, and update underground fire procedures and critical duties.
  • Procurement & Inventory – Manage fan reservations, procure ventilation components and stench, and audit inventory for compliance.
  • Administration & Documentation – Prepare construction packages, outage letters, SAP notifications, review mine rescue prints, and attend planning meetings.

About You

Education:

  • Minimum 2 Year Community College Diploma in an appropriate mining discipline or Post-Secondary equivalent.

Experience:

  • More than five years, up to ten years of progressive experience in ventilation, with surveying, development planning, stope planning and ground control experience considered as an asset.

Skills:

  • Competence in ventilation field measurements field, troubleshooting, auxiliary vent system design, providing ventilation outages restrictions, vent modelling and planning. Surveying, ground control, and general knowledge about drilling and blasting also considered.
  • Knowledge of vent modelling, cad software and scheduling tools as well as Microsoft Office. Working knowledge of SAP is considered an asset.
  • Required to perform routine professional or technical tasks, procedures or calculations requiring basic training in the specialty of ventilation (e.g., uses standard software at a functional level).
  • Proficiency in the use of: Deswik Cad, Ventsim.
  • Knowledge competency in both primary and secondary ventilation systems and ventilation design and planning tools including fan/system curves.
