JOB PURPOSE
To work in collaboration and support of the Nurse Specialized in Wound, Ostomy and Continence (NSWOC) role. The NSWOC applies evidence-based, advanced nursing knowledge, skills, and judgement specific to wound and ostomy care. As an independent practitioner within an inter-professional and collaborative team, the NSWOC acts as a resource and consultant for healthcare professionals and provides education and support to clients and their families.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Active registration with the Nurses' Association of New Brunswick.
- Baccalaureate degree in Nursing.
- Completion of (or willing to complete) Wound, Ostomy and Continence Education Program (WOC-EP) recognized by the World Council of Enterostomal Therapists (WCET).
- Canadian Nurses Association certification (WOCC (C)) is considered an asset.
- Minimum of 5 years of recent clinical experience.
- Ability to work independently and in teams.
- Demonstrated understanding of evidence-based practice related to ostomy and wound care.
- Demonstrated leadership, problem-solving and interpersonal skills.
- Well-developed presentation skills and demonstrated experience in providing education sessions to adult learners.
- Proven ability to lead projects and develop/implement new policies and procedures.
- Exemplary written and verbal communication skills, as well as critical thinking skills
- Physical ability to carry out required work, including travel throughout Horizon Health Network.
- CPR certification
- Ability to work within a collaborative practice with other nursing personnel
- High regard for confidentiality and advocacy for patients
- Demonstrates initiative and good judgement
- Ability to perform duties of the position
- Good work record and demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assesses the health care needs of patients, including patients assigned to non-professional staff
- Identifies patient needs and problems utilizing an assessment tool
- Identifies needs affecting discharge planning and potential services required at home
- Formulates objectives specific to the patient needs
- Provides health teaching, counselling, health promotion to individuals or groups.
- Provides nursing care required to achieve the patient's desired outcomes
- Evaluates outcomes of nursing actions for further assessment and planning
- Utilizes effective communication skills to achieve a helping relationship
- Supports new employees during orientation
- Directs and supervises non-professional staff
- Interacts with the nursing department in identifying, planning, implementing and evaluating changes.
- Demonstrates initiative for personal professional development
- Participates in programs promoting quality improvement on nursing unit
- Acts as clinical support and a consultant for nursing staff and other healthcare professionals.
- Provides ongoing assessment of in-patient needs and evaluation of care management issues as they relate to ostomy and or wound care.
- Implements and evaluates strategies to enhance knowledge acquisition relating to ostomy and wound care.
- Supports and provides guidance to individuals in the community with an ostomy regarding issues relating to skin breakdown, choice of appliance and ostomy care.
- Provides pre-operative and post-operative counselling to clients and their families requiring ostomy surgery as requested by surgeons.
- Measures and fits ostomy appliances and advises on types of temporary and permanent appliances.
Reporting Relationship:
This position reports to the Regional Manager for Skin and Wound Care Program.
NOTE: The above are basic responsibilities; related and allied duties may be assigned as necessary to support the operations of the Skin and Wound Care Program and the Regional Health Authority.
