The Planning team, part of Build Nova Scotia's Strategic Infrastructure & Development Division, is seeking an enthusiastic, thoughtful, and detail-oriented Planning Student to join the team for a work term during summer 2026. The successful candidate will work with BNS planning and other staff on a variety of interesting initiatives, obtaining hands-on experience at a crown corporation with the responsibility for delivering some of Nova Scotia's highest-profile infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of members of the Build NS Planning team, the responsibilities of this position will include:

  • Assisting in the development of planning and strategic land projects to support the management of Build Nova Scotia's property portfolio
  • Carrying out regulatory, site, and context analyses for projects
  • Conducting research and analyses, synthesizing information, collecting and visualizing data, and developing options and planning recommendations
  • Supporting the creation of maps, illustrations, models, and renderings for the purposes of spatial analyses, development scenario planning, and visual communications
  • Conducting fieldwork relating to Build Nova Scotia projects and properties, and augmenting existing asset inventories with further research (e.g., zoning, inventories of amenities and open/green spaces)
Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in a full-time accredited university program (graduate level preferred) in planning or closely related field, and returning to university in fall 2026
  • Fluency with office, graphics, GIS, and visualization software (e.g., Microsoft Office, Esri/QGIS, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite)
  • Exceptional written, oral, and visual communication skills
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills, combined with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Familiarity with planning principles, zoning regulations, and policy development and interpretation
  • A driven and perpetually positive attitude

Working Conditions:

  • Location: Downtown Halifax (full-time in-office)
  • Normal working hours are 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day

Additional Information:

This opportunity will start approximately May 4, 2026 with an end date of August 28, 2026. Term start/end dates are flexible.

Rate of pay for students is established based on current academic level.
