Position Overview

The Director of Communications reports to the Chief of Staff and is a senior leadership position within the Office of Government Members, responsible for providing strategic direction, management, and oversight of all communications functions. The role leads the planning, coordination, and delivery of clear, consistent, and effective communications that support the legislative and standing committee responsibilities of Members of the Government Caucus. This position operates in a high-paced environment and requires strong leadership, sound judgment, and the ability to manage teams, oversee complex work plans, and meet multiple, competing deadlines.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide senior strategic leadership and advice for communications within the Office of Government Members
  • Develop, implement, and oversee a comprehensive communications plan, including setting priorities, managing timelines, and ensuring effective roll-out across platforms
  • Lead and manage communications and research staff, including oversight of work plans, performance, and professional development
  • Provide advice and support on messaging, speech writing, and public communications
  • Oversee content development for media, digital, and public-facing platforms
  • Act as the primary point of contact for media inquiries and coordinate media engagements
  • Provide communications support to Government Members of the Legislative Assembly in relation to Legislative and Standing Committee responsibilities
  • Ensure communication deliverables are completed on time and aligned with strategic objectives
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders and government departments to ensure message alignment
  • Monitor media coverage and public engagement and report on communications effectiveness
Qualifications
  • Degree or diploma in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field
  • Minimum five years of experience in communications, public affairs, or a related field
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and French
  • Experience with digital communications and social media platforms
  • Ability to exercise discretion and sound judgment in sensitive situations

Salary: Pay Band 6 ($77,766 - $103,454 (placement within the band will be determined based on experience)
Language Requirement: Bilingual (English and French) - full professional proficiency required

Working Conditions
  • Full-time position based in Fredericton
  • Evening work is required during legislative sessions; occasional evening or weekend work may be required outside of session
  • Fast-paced work environment requiring adaptability
