Job Summary
The Laboratory Assistant performs a variety of duties associated with laboratory tests and analyses. Work can involve collecting blood and other specimens from patients; delivering specimens to the laboratory; sorting, recording, centrifuging and preparing specimens for analysis; packaging specimens for transport to other testing locations; receiving testing results; and performing a variety of routine, automated and manual tests.
Phlebotomists are an integral part of our healthcare team and are responsible for the collection of specimens for laboratory analysis. Phlebotomists are responsible for collecting blood from patients through venipuncture, instructing patients on proper collection techniques of urine and other specialized samples, properly labelling specimens, and other general duties as required.

Occasionally lifts or moves supplies generally not weighing in excess of 25 lbs and occasional carrying, pushing/pulling and lifting between 25-50 lbs.
Constantly stands, walks and bends or stretches into awkward positions when performing specimen collection procedures with patients.
Constantly there is a requirement for fine finger and precision work when using needles to extract specimens, and when palpating for veins, when entering data into the computer, and preparing specimen labels.
Job Qualifications
Graduation from a recognized program in Phlebotomy or Medical Laboratory Assistant is required or an adequate portion of the Laboratory Technologist as reviewed and approved by the employer, is required.
Training or experience in basic laboratory techniques.
Current and continuing certification with the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) as a Medical Laboratory Assistant is required. (MLA)
Experience working in a health care/hospital setting is an asset.
Demonstrated strong communication and interpersonal skills are required.
Demonstrated ability to work independently is required.
A satisfactory record of work performance is required.
