Utility Worker/Scale House Operator: Full-time
The Valley Region Solid Waste-Resource Management Authority (Valley Waste-Resource Management) is a regional solid waste-resource management authority under the Environment Act. The Authority operates in the municipal solid waste system in the Valley Region. Valley Waste is seeking candidates to fill this permanent, full-time position of Education and Inspection Coordinator.
A "Management Centre" is a public solid waste transfer station. Reporting to the Site Supervisor/Lead Hands, this role rotates between the tipping floor, public drop-off, and scale house as needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Scale House: Operate the weigh scale, register vehicles, record loads, issue invoices, collect tipping fees, and maintain accurate reports. Keep the scale platform clean and safe.
- Tipping Floor & Public Drop-Off: Direct vehicles, assist with unloading, sort mixed loads, maintain seasonal bins, and perform general site labour, including groundskeeping, snow removal, and cleanliness.
- Equipment Operation: Safely operate site equipment (wheel loader, forklift, tractor, roll-off and pick-up trucks, etc.) and report issues promptly.
- Public Relations & Safety: Provide courteous assistance to site users, explain source-separation rules, and follow all Occupational Health & Safety policies to maintain a safe and clean site.
Qualifications
- Grade 12 or equivalent; experience in solid waste operations is an asset.
- Experience with hazardous waste, weigh scales, or heavy equipment is considered an asset.
- Computer skills and willingness to work in a digital environment.
- Valid NS Driver's License (Class 5 required; Class 1 with Air Endorsement an asset).
- Ability to work overtime when required.
- Clean criminal background check.
Compensation & Benefits
This is a full-time position with a competitive salary of $48,289 to $57,185.27 and benefits, including an 8% employer/employee matched pension plan, 15 vacation days, and paid sick days.
