The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS) serve the public by regulating the practice of physicians, surgeons, physician assistants, and podiatrists. The College also plays a catalytic role in regulatory change within the province and nationally, shaping how regulatory standards evolve across Canada. This is a time of great change in medicine where the public is seeking more from the profession it funds: more access, more accountability, more service, and more transparency.

We are seeking a Deputy Registrar to help lead this vital work at a time of profound change in healthcare. Reporting to the CEO and Registrar, the Deputy Registrar provides oversight and leadership across the organization. They act and speak on behalf of the Registrar in their absence and represent the College locally and nationally. They lead the Department of Assessment, which evaluates the performance of physicians whose credentials or competence are under scrutiny for licensure; the Fitness to Practice Department, which supports and evaluates physicians with health conditions that might affect their ability to practice; and the Department of Programs and Allied Health Professionals, which delivers the Welcome Collaborative and oversee all physician extender programs.

The successful candidate must be a physician with excellent leadership skills. They have at least five years of clinical and senior administrative experience and are deeply committed to public safety and advancing the medical profession in response to evolving needs. This is a pivotal leadership role within a high-performing team known for its integrity, collaboration, and agility. The ideal candidate thrives in dynamic environments, embraces change, and contributes to the transformation of the College under the new Regulated Health Professions Act. The Deputy Registrar must balance strategic vision with operational detail, policy development with frontline decision-making, and national relationships with local implementation. They are collaborative, approachable, and reflective, valuing input from all levels of the team while maintaining the independence and decisiveness required of a regulator.

Regulatory experience, training in assessment of medical education and competence are assets but are not essential. What matters most is vision, integrity, and the ability to lead through change. The Deputy Registrar demonstrates the highest standards of ethical behavior, integrity and confidentiality.
