ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
The Medicine Program of NL Health Services – Eastern Urban Zone has an immediate opening for a full-time, salaried Gastroenterologist to join the Division of Gastroenterology in St. John's, NL.
The Gastroenterology group in St. John's operates out of Health Sciences Centre, St. Clare's Mercy Hospital, and the Ambulatory Clinic Hub. The group currently offers advanced IBD care, hepatology and transplant hepatology, ERCP, EUS, motility studies, 24-hour pH monitoring, and capsule endoscopy. The team also has a group of IBD Nurse Practitioners shared among the group to help deliver care to complex IBD patients.
The successful candidate will participate in an equal share of province-wide on-call for Gastroenterology with the current complement of Gastroenterologists, and will have an equal share of elective and urgent inpatient endoscopy time. The position includes three (3) half-day endoscopy slots per week, as well as weekly NLHS-based clinic time. The incumbent will be responsible for inpatient and outpatient Gastroenterology services including assessment of new patients and follow-up of existing patients.
The position is affiliated with Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador and serves as the primary training centre for medical students and residents. Supervision of medical learners in a clinical setting is expected.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Medical Degree (MD) from a recognized institution
- Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Certification in Gastroenterology (or equivalent) — letter of eligibility may be considered
- Eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador (www.cpsnl.ca)
- Must satisfy credentialing and privilege requirements of NL Health Services including a satisfactory criminal record check and vulnerable sector check
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient Gastroenterology services including assessment of new patients and follow-up of existing patients
- Perform endoscopy procedures including three (3) half-day endoscopy slots per week
- Participate in province-wide on-call coverage shared equitably among Gastroenterology division members
- Share equitably in elective and urgent inpatient endoscopy time
- Deliver advanced IBD care, hepatology, ERCP, EUS, motility studies, 24-hour pH monitoring, and capsule endoscopy as applicable
- Supervise and teach medical students and residents through the Memorial University affiliation
- Work collaboratively with the interdisciplinary Gastroenterology team including IBD Nurse Practitioners
- Support person- and family-centered care; promote patient and worker safety by integrating safety into work practices, identifying risks, and implementing improvements
