An ACE unit is a specialized unit for hospitalized older adults that is designed to improve patient outcomes. It will incorporate environmental adaptations along with a robust interdisciplinary team providing patient centric care. ACE units are evidence-based, cost effective interventions to improve experiences and outcomes for older adults in acute care. NL Health Services ? Western Zone will become the first in the province to establish a dedicated 15 bed ACE unit which will be located at the acute care facility.

The Clinical Nurse Specialist is responsible for applying relevant research and a broad range of theories to clinical practice. This position will provide expert nursing care and coordinate complex care challenged across a variety of settings through the roles of expert clinician, educator, researcher, consultant, and change agent to promote quality outcomes for the older adult population in alignment with provincial priorities. This position will work collaboratively with the interprofessional team to achieve medical stability while preventing maximum function while ensuring a safe and effective discharge plan for the patients. Within this model, the successful applicant must demonstrate strong knowledge of advanced nursing practices within clinical technology. The incumbent must also be able to demonstrate competency in leadership, advocacy, strong decision-making skills, and program planning, along with development, monitoring and evaluation of protocols, guidelines and standards.

In addition, the successful candidate must demonstrate the key skills, behaviours, abilities and knowledge as outlined in the five domains of the LEADS in a Caring Environment framework.

Qualifications: The successful candidate must have current registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador and possess a Master?s degree in nursing. A minimum of five years of recent acute care experience within the last eight years, working with the older adult population. Demonstrate the ability to lead/facilitate change and introduce clinical best practice. Exhibit excellent communication skills (both written and oral). Demonstrate ability to respond to shifting priorities and/or multiple competing priorities. Any additional training or certification in geriatric care would be considered an asset. A satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is a requirement for this position.

In the event no suitable candidate is found with the above-noted qualifications, consideration may be given to applicants who do not currently possess a Master's Degree provided they are willing to complete same within five years of appointment to the position. In this case, the successful applicant must be prepared to demonstrate proof of registration/enrolment to an appropriate degree program within the first year of appointment to the position. Furthermore, the successful applicant is required to provide annual updates based on the progress of each semester of the program.
