JOB PURPOSE
The ICU/ER Registered Nurse provides high-quality, patient centered care in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as the primary area of responsibility. The role also includes orientation and cross-training in the Emergency Department (ER), with the expectation of providing clinical coverage in the ER as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Current registration in good standing with the Nurse's Association of New Brunswick.
- Bachelor's Degree preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum 2 years Acute Care Nursing experience; ICU and/or ER nursing strongly preferred.
- Critical Care or Emergency Nursing Certification considered and asset.
- Current BLS, ACLS and BCMI required; TNCC, PALS, ENPC, and/or NRP considered and asset. Willingness to obtain necessary certification within 1 year of hire.
- NB Critical Care Course or willing to take same.
- Demonstrated ability to perform under pressure with strong assessment, prioritization, and critical thinking skills.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Commitment to evidence-based practice and continuous quality improvement.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
ICU (Primary Care)
- Deliver specialized nursing care to the critically ill patients, including assessment, monitoring, intervention, and evaluation.
- Manage advanced therapies and equipment (ventilators, hemodynamic monitoring, vasoactive infusions et cetera)
- Collaborate with physicians, respiratory therapists, and other members of the healthcare team to implement individualized care plans.
- Respond promptly to changes in patient condition, initiating emergency interventions when necessary.
- Provide education updates, and psychosocial support to patients and families.
ER (Secondary Area)
- Complete ER orientation and maintain competence in emergency nursing skills.
- Provide episodic care to patients across the lifespan, including triage, stabilization, and treatment.
- Assist with resuscitations, trauma care, and urgent procedures.
- Support seamless transfer of patients from ER to other units as necessary.
- Familiarity with pediatric and obstetrical emergencies.
- Stabilization and initial management of acute/critical presentations (trauma, MI, stroke, sepsis, overdose and psychiatric emergencies).
Hospital-Wide Duties
- Respond to ACT calls to provide critical care expertise at the bedside outside of ICU.
- Assist with intra- and inter-facility transfers, ensuring safe stabilization, documentation and communication.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in patient records.
- Adhere to hospital policies, procedures, and best practice guidelines.
- Contribute to patient safety, infection control, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
- Participate in professional development, staff education, and interdepartmental collaboration.
Reporting Structure
Will report directly to the ICU nurse manager with accountability to Professional Practice and Clinical Educators/Resource Nurse.
Working Conditions
- Rotating shifts, including days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
- Frequent standing, walking, lifting, and repositioning of patients; use of specialized equipment.
- Exposure to infectious diseases, biohazards, hazardous medications, and emotionally stressful situations.
- Fast-paced, high-acuity environment requiring rapid decision-making and multi-tasking.
COMPETENCIES
- Advanced assessment skills (neuro, cardio, respirator, renal and multi-system).
- Proficiency with invasive and non-invasive monitoring (arterial lines, central lines et cetera).
- Ventilator management and advanced airway support.
- Medication administration and titration.
- Hemodynamic monitoring and interpretation.
- Proficiency with ACLS and resuscitation protocols.
- Post-operative critical care management.
- Pain and sedation management.
- End-of-life care, palliative measures, and family support in critical situations.
