The municipality of Tantramar's Engineering and Public Works Department is currently accepting applications for a full time, permanent positoin under CUPE local 1188 for a Utility Worker.
Purpose: The year-round provision of public services as it pertains to the water and wastewater system that includes manholes, pipes, valves, fire hydrants, sewage pumping stations and sewage treatment facilities.
Responsibility: Superintendent of Public Works
GENERAL DUTIES
Under the direction of the Superintendent of Public Works:
· Operation and maintenance of the water distribution system, wastewater collection and wastewater treatment systems.
· Performs water quality testing for drinking water and wastewater as per the approval to operate.
· Collects chlorine residuals at various sites on a weekly basis and take other samples as required.
· Perform preventative maintenance and monitoring.
· Troubleshooting of issues.
· Performs repairs to sewer and watermain breaks by entering excavations, locating the main and undertaking the necessary repair.
· Performs maintenance and repair on fire hydrants including pumping and snow removal.
· Performs locates for water and sewer infrastructure.
· Performs water and sewer service installations.
· Regularly operates water distribution valves and inspects sewer manholes to ensure proper operation of utility system.
· Participates in the development of Preventative Maintenance Standards and undertakes record keeping as required.
· Regularly inspects, performs maintenance, troubleshoots and repairs sewage pumping stations including pumps, motors, valves and standby power to ensure that they are functioning properly.
· Maintains sewage pumping stations in a good clean condition including any painting required.
· Undertakes water meter maintenance, repairs and reads.
· Operates the pressure compressor to clean water service connections, as required.
· Undertakes activities related to the general cleanliness of the water tower.
· Responds to emergency situations after normal working hours.
· Operating the backhoe for snow removal around fire hydrants.
· Undertaking watermain flushing activities on a required basis.
· Assist in snow removal activities.
· Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
· High School diploma or equivalent is required.
· Have a minimum of two years of relevant experience, which must include at least one year of municipal water/wastewater and wastewater treatment (operation, maintenance, construction, repair or sampling).
· Experience with autosamplers and auto-flushers an asset.
· Capable of working in confined spaces under normal and emergency conditions involving trenches, manholes, etc.
· Capable of working with potentially hazardous gases such as chlorine, methane, and other sewer gases.
· Class I Water Distribution System Operator and/or Class I Wastewater Collection and/or Class I Wastewater Treatment Systems considered an asset.
· Ability to obtain Utility Worker Level I certification (Class I Wastewater Collection and Class I Water Distribution) and must be completed within two years to remain in the position.
· Must have a mechanical ability to repair and maintain water and sewer infrastructure, including pumps, valves and hydrants.
· Experience with autosamplers and auto-flushers an asset.
· Understanding and basic ability to use SCADA.
· Must be capable of working with minimal supervision.
· Ability to communicate effectively with other employees and the public.
· Ability to understand and apply written and oral instructions.
