The Fleet Manager oversees the entire maintenance and repair function for the Coach Atlantic fleet (coaches, minibuses, school buses, vehicles) and company facilities.
Reporting directly to the Vice President, the Fleet Manager will be responsible for defining departmental strategy, ensuring rigorous regulatory compliance, and assisting the Maintenance Manager in leading a companywide maintenance team. This role is key to ensuring the safety, reliability, and longevity of the entire operational infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Staff Management
- Provide strategic direction and leadership to the maintenance department, setting clear goals, objectives, and performance standards.
- Assist the Maintenance Manager in managing the entire departmental staff, including coordinating work across internal divisions and with external agencies.
Fleet & Facilities Management
- Manage all preventative maintenance, scheduled repairs, and emergency repairs for the entire fleet and company facilities/grounds.
- Process and oversee warranty agreements and parts, review equipment issues.
- Manage a fleet management software system for tracking maintenance history, including required documentation and information, costs, labor, and compliance.
- Schedule buses on the road ensuring schedule complies with preventative maintenance and inspection schedule.
- Manage and optimize service contracts with external vendors, monitoring performance and negotiating favourable terms for equipment, supplies, and contract services.
- Order and maintain par levels of Decals and other items as needed.
- Invoice third party customers.
Compliance & Safety
- Ensure 100% compliance with all relevant regulatory, safety, and environmental standards, including any Provincial and Federal regulatory transportation bodies, CVOR, and environmental regulations.
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive documentation for all inspections, repairs, and certifications; lead internal audits and serve as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies during external inspections.
- Maintain compliance with all licensing, registration and insurance requirements.
Qualifications
Experience
- Proven experience in a management level role, successfully leading and managing a large-scale maintenance operation for a commercial fleet.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive experience in fleet maintenance management, with a significant portion dedicated to heavy-duty vehicles.
- An understanding of applicable Federal and Provincial transportation laws, rules, and regulations.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Strategic Leadership: Ability to effectively direct, monitor, and evaluate subordinate staff, and to lead the development of long-term departmental plans.
- Regulatory & Audit Expertise: Proven ability to lead audits, interpret complex technical procedures and governmental regulations, and ensure documentation integrity.
- Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, write professional reports/specifications, and present complex information to the Senior Management Team.
- Analytical: Strong problem-solving skills, including the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
