Job Summary
The Laboratory Assistant provides support to the Pathology Laboratory for specimen accessioning, filing, disposal of specimens, gross assistance, and maintenance of equipment. The position performs advanced work with Pathologists and the Provincial Medical Examiner during forensic and hospital autopsies on a rotating basis. The position works with computer terminals to review or order data.

Job Demands
By applying for this job, you acknowledge an understanding that regular requirements and demands of this job include (but are not limited to):
Occasionally lifts or moves supplies generally not weighing in excess of 25 lbs and occasionally carries, pushes/pulls and lifts between 25-50 lbs and in some cases, although very limited, over 50 lbs.
Constantly stands, walks and bends or stretches into awkward positions when performing specimen collection procedures.
Constantly there is a requirement for fine finger and precision work when using needles to extract specimens, and when palpating for veins, when entering data into the computer, and preparing specimen labels.

Job Qualifications
Graduation from a recognized program in Phlebotomy or Medical Laboratory Assistant is required.
Training or experience in basic laboratory techniques.
Current and continuing certification with the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) as a Medical Laboratory Assistant is required.
A satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is required.
