The Opportunity
We are currently seeking a Health, Safety, Environment, and Risk Advisor to join our HSER team in Long Harbour, NL.
This is a permanent on-site position, working a Monday-Thursday or Tuesday-Friday shift at our Long Harbour Operations.
Reporting to the Environment Superintendent, the HSER Advisor will be responsible for guiding the operations to meeting its strategic objectives of conducting business with zero fatalities and becoming a leader in sustainable mining.
Additionally, in this position you will:
- Provide HSER support and leadership to VNL operations through development, implementation and compliance auditing of the VNL HSER Management System including but not limited to ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards. Coordinate planning/implementation of new HSER Management System components, permitting/compliance strategies, including budgeting and scheduling. Perform field inspections and audits against HSER management systems as required.
- Complete reports required by regulating agencies to ensure compliance with applicable permits, guidelines, regulations and other binding licenses to operate.
- Provide proactive HSER leadership by example. Mentor and coach peers on HSER compliance and stated business objectives of zero fatalities and sustainable mining.
- Represent HSER internally in corporate working groups, capital or engineering project teams to ensure our strategic objectives are considered.
- Support through preparation of reports or data-sharing the various corporate and management initiatives that are related to HSER strategic objectives in a timely and accurate matter. Perform work related to VNL strategic plans and HSER tactical plans as assigned.
- Participate in or lead the development of training materials related to the HSER mandate including the delivery of training as needed, the communication of the training expectation and the field verification that the training has been effective.
- Develop and conduct compliance monitoring programs (e.g. ambient air, water quality, soil quality, wildlife, etc.) as stipulated in regulatory approvals. Conduct or manage effects monitoring as prescribed in the Environmental Effect Monitoring (EEM) program and per regulatory, corporate and social requirements.
- Manage contractors performing work on behalf of VNL as required.
- Other duties and activities as appropriate and necessary.
About You
Education:
- A minimum of a diploma in a relevant field is required.
- A technical certification in an Occupational Health & Safety Program, Environmental Science, Engineering Studies or equivalent is required.
- Professional designation is considered an asset.
Experience:
- A minimum of 5 years' experience in relevant roles are required.
Skills:
- Working knowledge of Newfoundland and Labrador Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, Environment Protection Act and associated regulations and federal Metal and Diamond Mine Effluent Regulations.
- Ability to maintain proficiency as an HSER professional with current applicable government regulations and industry best practices.
