Job Opportunity: Investment Principal (Permanent)
As an Investment Principal, you'll play a key role on our Venture Capital Team, identifying and evaluating early-stage opportunities with strong potential for commercial success and long-term sustainability. You'll lead transactions, manage portfolio companies, and provide mentorship to junior team members. The Venture Capital Team drives Invest Nova Scotia's strategy to support entrepreneurship and innovation across the province. We take a collaborative approach to investment decision-making, focusing on advancing the strongest opportunities for the organization.
What You'll Do
- You'll take a hands-on approach to identifying and evaluating early-stage investment opportunities, using your insight, experience and network to guide thoughtful decisions.
- From screening and due diligence to deal closing, you'll lead the investment process, including drafting of reports and investment recommendations.
- You'll work with portfolio companies to help them grow, connect with the investment community, and serve on a board of directors when needed.
- You'll also support successful exits, strengthen relationships across the venture capital and innovation ecosystem, and mentor junior team members along the way.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Engineering, or Science, with at least seven years of relevant experience (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
- Graduate degree, CFA (or similar designation) is a plus.
- Experience in assessing investment opportunities and leading transactions, preferably in the venture capital industry.
- Strong analytical, research, and financial modeling skills.
- Knowledge or operational experience in high-growth, technology-focused, or innovation-driven sectors, with a special focus on defence and dual use technologies.
- Adept at managing multiple projects and investment analyses under tight deadlines and evolving priorities.
- Experience and an understanding of venture capital principles and small business/start-up operations.
- Strong communication skills and ease engaging with external partners on behalf of Invest Nova Scotia.
- Experience mentoring or leading junior investment professionals.
