Legal Counsel
Description
The College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick (CPSNB) serves and protects the public by regulating the practice of medicine in the province. With over 25 employees, CPSNB is currently seeking a legal counsel to assist multiple departments.
Key Responsibilities
The legal counsel will provide legal services across multiple areas of the College's operations, including complaints, professional standards and policy, and contract and corporate matters. This role supports the Associate Registrar and General Counsel in ensuring compliance, mitigating risk, and advancing organizational objectives through sound legal advice.
Below is an outline of key responsibilities in the complaints department:
- Identifying the legal issues in a complaint,
- Assisting in the investigation of complaints,
- Preparing complaints for presentation to the Complaints and Registration Committee, the Review Committee or a Board of Inquiry,
- Conducting legal research,
- Ensuring respect of administrative law and privacy principles, and
- Facilitating informal resolution (ADR) of complaints.
In the professional standards and policy department, the legal counsel will assist with the following:
- Conducting research of various statutes, regulations, policies, and professional standards,
- Drafting memos,
- Assisting in drafting and implementing legislative amendments, regulations, professional standards, policies, and procedures,
- Responding to enquiries from the public, physicians or other healthcare partners.
The legal counsel will also support other departments, as follows:
- Providing legal advice and support on a variety of other issues, including governance, administrative law, contract and corporate matters
- Other duties that may be assigned by the Associate Registrar and General Counsel or Registrar to meet the overall mandate and functioning of the College.
Required Education and Experience
- Juris Doctor or LLB
- 3+ years of work experience

- Ability to manage multiple tasks in a timely manner
- Bilingualism (French and English) is an asset
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to navigate emotionally charged situations

- Able to prioritize workflow to meet changing operational needs
