We are pleased to be partnered with them to bring an experienced Controller to their team in Halifax.
The Controller will be an important member of the team, overseeing accounting and financial operations for the group's companies. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, compliance, and strategic financial planning to support the company's growth and operational excellence. The Controller will have a broad and strategic role, contributing not only to financial leadership but also to key operational areas such as human resources, back-office systems, and insurance management.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Maintaining general ledger accuracy and overseeing journal entries.
- Generating reports including cash flow, accounts payable/receivable reconciliations, and variance analysis.
- Developing and monitoring budgets for projects and corporate operations.
- Conducting cost analysis and providing insights to senior management.
- Implementing and maintaining internal control systems.
- Ensuring compliance with local, provincial, and federal regulations.
- Coordinating annual audits and liaising with external auditors.
- Managing job cost accounting and Work-In-Progress (WIP) reporting.
- Overseeing payroll for employees and subcontractors.
- Ensuring compliance with labor laws, managing benefits programs, and confirming workforce planning aligns with project financial forecasts.
- Overseeing accounting software, project management tools, and ensuring systems are integrated and functioning efficiently.
- Managing risk-related financial aspects, including maintaining adequate insurance coverage for projects, overseeing policy renewals, and ensuring compliance with all insurance requirements for contractors and operations.
- Monitoring project expenses to prevent overruns and maintain profitability.
- Supervising accounting staff and supporting their development.
- Partnering with project managers and leadership to align financial strategies with operational goals.
The ideal candidate will have:
- CPA designation and bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in accounting, coupled with experience in the construction or real estate development industry.
- Strong knowledge of cost accounting, job costing, and financial practices relevant to development projects.
- Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and work independently.
