Franchise Management Inc. (FMI) is looking to hire an individual who lives by our corporate values of Heart, Integrity and Drive to fill the position of Senior Accountant.The Senior Accountant is responsible for internal reporting of financial performance, ensuring accuracy of data and adherence to accounting principles, as well as performing reconciliations and preparing schedules to support all general ledger accounts. In addition, the Senior Accountant will support the Intermediate Accountants, by providing training and support to help improve efficiencies in accounting processes and procedures. The Senior Accountant is also responsible for ensuring compliance and reporting of sales taxes for the various federal, provincial, state and local jurisdictions, annual tax filings and other government reporting.

Responsibilities

What you will do:

  • Review financial reports for the restaurants, including Profit & Loss (P&L) statements and other regular reports

  • Thorough balance sheet review each period, ensuring accounting controls and processes are followed. Review and approve GL account reconciliations in Blackline.
  • Training, support and enrichment by spending time one-on-one with IAs training and sharing efficiencies
  • Suggest improvements to efficiencies and effectiveness of accounting processes
  • Prepare all sales and use tax returns and relevant reports, including issuance of exemption certificates
  • Monitor changes to tax rates for all jurisdictions (Canada and US) and work with the Operations and Menu Maintenance teams to ensure new tax rates are calculating correctly in the POS systems
  • Reconcile all tax related GL accounts in the accounting system, Sage 300, and reporting system, Blackline
  • Prepare and submit the annual filing of the 1099 US tax forms
  • Research tax questions and handle special projects as needed
  • Prepare audit working papers for year end
  • Other duties and projects as assigned by Controller
Qualifications

What you bring to the role:

  • Post-secondary education in accounting is preferred but will also consider a combination of education plus relevant experience

  • Solid knowledge of accounting principles

  • Able to lead and coach direct reports, with prior managerial experience preferred

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Great at problem solving, with an ability to think outside the box

  • Strong knowledge and capabilities in spreadsheets

  • Enjoys a fast-paced, deadline driven environment
