Communications Manager

Position Description

Research Nova Scotia is seeking a Communications Manager to join its Halifax-based team. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Communications Manager works with the broader RNS team, partners, and the research community to help create awareness of RNS's programs and services, and to amplify information about research, and researchers, in Nova Scotia. This is an in-office position in our Halifax office with the possibility of working remotely up to two days per week following the probation period.

Research Nova Scotia (RNS) is an independent, not-for-profit corporation with the mandate to:

  • support, organize and coordinate the funding of research to support and advance key provincial research priorities determined by the Minister
  • increase the research capacity of the Province
  • support the Province's research community.

Duties

  • Create and execute an organizational communications plan.
  • Craft, source, curate, and execute content and communications across social media platforms, including LinkedIn, Instagram/Facebook.
  • Manage the RNS website.
  • Develop and manage monthly content calendar.
  • Provide other teams within the organization with communication support as required.
  • Write or edit researcher stories and media releases.
  • Draft, coordinate and support development of materials such as video and podcasts.
  • Create communication strategies for campaigns, projects, and/or funding opportunities.
  • Build and maintain relationships with partners, key stakeholders, agencies, and media.
  • Identify new opportunities for collaboration.
  • Make communications recommendations to RNS's leadership team.
  • Complete other duties as assigned by the leadership team.

Required

  • Strong written and verbal communications/storytelling skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Excellent time and task management.
  • Effective relationship management.
  • The ability to work independently while managing multiple tasks.
  • High proficiency in social media and web platforms.
  • Experience running social media accounts and creating content calendars.
  • Strong writing skills, including spelling and grammar. (English required, French is an asset)
  • Competency in the Microsoft Office suite and the main tools we use to communicate and report, such as Canva, Sprout Social, MailChimp, Google Analytics, WordPress Content Management System (CMS), Data Visualization, and Meltwater.
  • Skills in photography and videography are desirable assets.

About You

  • You hold a degree in marketing, communications, journalism, or public relations along with at least two years of relevant experience.
  • You have a passion for storytelling and writing.
  • You excel at digital communication.
  • You are a personable individual.
  • You're an effective communicator with strong organizational and project management skills.
  • You are a strong team player who also enjoys working independently.
  • You know when to ask for help and are willing to help others.
  • You are legally eligible to work in Nova Scotia.

Compensation

Salary in the range of $60,000 - $70,000 depending on your level of experience, plus a generous pension and health benefits package.
