Winter Co-op Student placement - Huntsman Aquatic Biosciences
Location: Huntsman Marine Science Centre, St Andrews, NB
Commitment: 37.5 hours per week for up to 12 weeks. Some flexibility regarding start and finish dates but employment will take place between January and March 2026
Rate of Pay: $16.35 per hour (accommodation may be available in a co-shared apartment on the Huntsman campus at a favorable student rate rate).
Eligibility: Applicants must currently study at a university or college in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art or Math (STEAM) and Business. The placement must be of benefit to your studies. You must be a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident, or have Refugee status. There is no age limit for this program. Priority will be given to female students in STEM fields, visible minorities, persons with disabilities, Indigenous students, first-year students, and recent immigrants.
Background: The Huntsman Marine Science Centre (St. Andrews, New Brunswick) is a not-for-profit charity organization with a focus on ocean conservation and marine education and research. We have one co-op position available. This position is to assist with duties in the Huntsman's Taxonomy and Biodiversity Lab, particularly for a project creating a more complete barcode reference library for Atlantic Canadian Marine Invertebrates. There may be occasional opportunities to assist with fieldwork or outreach work.
Responsibilities:
- Assisting with documenting and archiving specimens of marine invertebrates
- Preparing and analyzing biological samples for taxonomic analysis, including microscope work and slide preparation.
- Writing content and sourcing and editing images for species webpages.
- Assisting in other related duties as required.
- Maintaining a neat, clean, and organized work environment.
- Ensuring all health and safety procedures are adhered to.
Minimum Requirements:
- Enrolled in University or College and studying a STEAM subject related to the position.
- Proven initiative and self-motivation.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Good IT skills - Microsoft Office.
- Ability to work well independently or cooperatively with a team.
- Demonstrated planning, organizational, time management skills.
- Effective oral and written communication skills (in English).
Additional Assets:
- Education or experience in Marine Biology.
- Experience with identification of marine life (ideally from the east coast of Canada).
- Experience of laboratory work
- Experience with working with genetic data
