The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Labourer Smelter to join our Copper Cliff Smelter team in Sudbury, Ontario.

This is a unionized (L6500) permanent on-site position. The work schedule is a rotational shift schedule of days and nights.

This role is an entry level position at our Smelter. As a Smelter Labourer you will be part of a small team with a direct supervisor. You will be required to operate various pieces of equipment (both mobile and stationary), interact with hot metal, dust, weak acid and process slurry systems to achieve team goals related to safety, production and cost. The job blends physical labor with technical equipment operation in an industrial setting.

Additionally, in this position you may be required to:

  • Receive work instructions and assists with conveyor operations, clearing blockages, cleaning belts, and scaling bins.
  • Operate mobile equipment including forklifts, cranes, hoists, and sweepers to load/unload materials and clean work areas.
  • Handle manual tasks such as sweeping, vacuuming, washing down equipment, and preparing surfaces for painting.
  • Install, remove, and maintain chute liners, moulds, refractory materials, and other components; and, perform minor repairs.
  • Assists with dust transfer operations using compressors, vibrators, hoses, and valves;
  • Record and weigh transferred materials.
  • Work with piping systems containing process slurries or gasses.
  • Collect samples, records data, measures bins, and ensures proper documentation
  • Operate service trucks, performs equipment checks and lubrication, clears snow and ice, and maintains a clean, safe work area.

About You

Education:

  • Minimum Grade 12 completed or GED equivalency, with preference given to post secondary completion.

Experience:

  • Minimum 1–2 years of experience in industrial settings, manufacturing, mining, mineral or metal processing plants or material handling is preferred.
  • Experience operating mobile equipment like forklifts, cranes, hoists, and loaders is highly valuable.
  • Familiarity with safety protocols, lockout/tagout procedures, and basic maintenance tasks is important.

Skills:

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and work well with others in a team environment.
  • Written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be obsessed with safety and risk.
  • Demonstrate open and transparent dialogue in all aspects of work.
